Knockquhassen Reservoir is a wonderfully sprawling 37 acres reservoir which is made up of a mixture of shallow and deep troughs, just 15 minutes from Stranraer. Situated at NX 0188 5940 the reservoir can be accessed with care down a single track road (note the last 100 yards can be a bit rough). Knockquhassen Reservoir can be accessed by taking Ochtrelure way off A77 in Stranraer then turning onto the old military road, take the first right and then turn left at Hillside Piggeries and follow the road to the Reservoir. The water is stocked with hard fighting rainbow trout and although not the easiest of fishing it is well worth the effort. Brown trout are also stocked complimenting the natural populations of brown trout which tend to be found in the shallower end of the reservoir. A day ticket, which can be purchased from Sports Shop in Stranraer and Meadowsweet at Soulseat, permits anglers to bank fish between Knockquhassen and the four waters (Dindinnie, Soulseat, Magillie and Penwhirn). If you are resident at Green Loch House, Soulseat associated tickets are available for those who have a caravan or holiday home in the area. Prices are: Senior and youth tickets: £18/day or £80/week; OAP: £16/day or £60/week; Junior (under 17s): £10/day or £50/week; Evening: £12/day with a 1 fish limit. This fly fishing only reservoir, has restrictions to the bag limit set at 2 fish per day across the entire spread of waters, except with evening tickets which is a 1 fish limit. Catch and Release in encouraged. Anglers should cease fishing once they have reached their two fish limit for the day. Only one rod may be used which must be hand held at all times.
Details of returns should be given to the sports shop in Stranraer and for more details visit www.stranraerfishing.com.
