Overview

The Burn beat is the boundary to a wonderful country estate established in the late 18th century. The river is only 150m from the main 18th century mansion house - originally the home of General Lord Adam Gordon - set in an outstanding area of natural beauty. The river environment is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

The North Esk is a first class salmon river, draining almost 290 square miles, with brown and sea trout also present. The river rises high in the Grampians to flow from Glen Esk to the sea at Montrose, a distance of 35 kms. It has long been recognised as one of the most prolific salmon rivers, for its size, in Scotland. The Burn beat has always enticed anglers and fishing can be very productive.

Some 8 named pools are accessible and productive - though a bit of a scramble to some. The pools are signed and a beat map will be issued with the permit.

Car parking is available at The Burn mansion house from where permits, beat maps and catch returns can be collected from The Burn Office.

Accommodation can booked and details can be provided on request.

The Burn operates as an educational charitable trust and serves as a retreat and study centre for school, college and University groups.
