River Don update March 7th
The Don opened for the start of the salmon season on the 12th of February. A decent turnout of anglers lined the banks across various beats but unfortunately only an odd salmon and sea trout kelt was landed for the day. This pattern of catches continued until the 19th of February when the first confirmed springer at 6lbs landed off the ADAA beat at Kemnay. Over the remaining weeks of the month news trickled in of several other fish being landed from Inverurie Kemnay and lower down river at Parkhill. By the end of the month a total of seven fish had been reported, a few still carrying sea lice. All have been in excellent condition with the heaviest at 13lbs.
So, an encouraging start for the river, water levels currently remain at a great height for fishing and encouraging any arriving fish off the coast to push upriver. As the weather improves angling effort will increase on the middle and upper river which will hopefully add some more fish over the month.
The trout season gets underway on the 15th March. The Don offers some of the best trout fishing in the country, and given the favourable conditions anglers will be keen to get out onto the river.
