River Don Update 05/04/24

The Don is currently running high and coloured due to continual heavy rainfall over the past two days. River levels are now slowly dropping, and we should be fishing again tomorrow morning at least on the upper reaches anyway. This latest rise will have moved some fish around the system and hopefully encourage a few more in from the coast. Landings of fresh salmon have been ticking over on several beats where fish have stopped off for a breather. Anglers have had to endure all manner of weather conditions recently whilst out and angling effort has remained low on many beats as a result. The bulk of catches have come from beats around the Inverurie area, but over the past couple of weeks fish have been pushing into the upper reaches and several have now been landed above Alford. Anglers fishing below at Parkhill ADAA beats continue to catch an odd fish report and report seeing a few “runners” heading through every few days or, so, which is encouraging news for the beats above. Over twenty fish have now been landed off the river, an improvement on past springs and hopefully catches continue to improve over the month.

Trout anglers have been limited to a few ideal days since the season started, poor conditions including low water temperatures and cold easterly winds have been a hinderance and hatches of LDO’s and March Browns have been slow to get going. An odd trout is starting to look up and if the weather warms and settles, I’m sure the dry fly sport will kick off. Most of the trout being caught recently have been on nymphs and wet fly patterns fished deeper in the slower pools. A few nice fish have been returned by anglers fishing from Kildrummy downstream to Inverurie the best around 5lbs.

Tight lines,
