Inverurie Angling Association have taken over administration of the Inverurie Burgh Fishings and are making access available to both members and visitors.
The Inverurie Fishings comprise approximately 2.5 miles on the left (north) bank of the River Don plus 0.25 miles right bank. and approximately a further 4 miles on the right bank of the River Ury.
River Don fishings start at the confluence with the Ury some 0.25 miles below the road bridge on the B993 and upstream to a small stream, Polinar Burn on the road identified as St James's Place and all the fishing is on the left bank i.e. the town side. There is also approx. 0.25 fishing available on the right bank between the road bridges accessing the town
It is a lovely stretch of water passing through wooded countryside, with over a dozen named pools and a great variety of streams and glides offering excellent opportunities for both salmon and trout anglers.
A 14 to 15ft rod is useful for spring and autumn fishing but slightly lighter 12ft to 13ft rod might be a better option during the summer months.
Fishing is generally from the bank as most pools are accessible but some wading may be necessary if pursuing trout or sea trout.
The River Ury offers approx. 4 miles of right bank fishing from the road bridge on the B9001 down to the confluence with the River Don approx. 0.25 miles below the road bridge on the B993. The Ury is the largest tributary of the Don but is a much smaller river which can easily be covered by a single handed rod. It follows a meandering route and has a variety of deep pools, interspersed with short runs, providing some interesting trout fishing and the occasional the salmon.
Salmon Fishing
Season : 11 February to 31 October
The salmon fishing can be quite good in favourable water conditions and they are mainly caught on the River Don although the occasional salmon is caught on the Ury. Not in the same class as the River Dee or the Spey perhaps, but certainly well worth fishing as the Don has always been a bit of a well kept secret.
The Don was made a Category 3 River in 2018 resulting in total catch and release policy being adopted by the Don District Salmon Fishery Board
Sea Trout
Season: 11 February to 31 October
Although not present in large numbers, sea trout are frequently caught on both the Don and the Ury. They usually appear, and are present, towards the end of May till the end of the season.
Brown Trout
Season: 15 March to 6 October
The Don is well known for salmon and sea trout, but the reason why most anglers visit the river is for the world class brown trout fishing!
Spectacular Brownies in the region of 2 to 3 lb are not uncommon and much larger ones are caught every year. If conditions are right and you catch the hatch, the sport can be truly amazing. The local trout angler ethos is very much one of catch & release and barbless flies.
Sunday fishing (fly only and catch and release) is permitted for brown trout.
To help encourage junior anglers to take up sport worm fishing is allowed on the River Ury during the months of June - August when accompanied by a responsible adult. Wading in the main is fairy easy although most of the pools can be covered from the bank. Some areas are suitable for disabled and wheel chair access.
NOTE : In the interests of preserving stocks it is recommended that all sea trout and brown trout are returned to the river.
