The River Deveron

The Deveron has the fifth highest salmon and sea trout rod catch in Scotland and holds the record for the heaviest Atlantic salmon caught on the fly in the UK. The fish weighed 61lbs and was caught by Mrs. Clementina "Tiny" Morison on 21st October 1924.

The Deveron rises in the Cabrach area of west Aberdeenshire and flows 48 miles through one of Scotlands unspoilt glens to Banff and enters the Moray Firth at Banff Bay.

From its source, the river flows 17 miles down Strathglass to the town of Huntly. Below the town the river is joined by the River Bogie, a good sea trout river, and 6 miles further downstream by the Isla tributary. From there the river flows eastwards to Turriff and then 11 miles north to Banff. Above Huntly the river is fast flowing with many gravely runs, rocky cascades and deep pools. Below the town the river flows slowly through rich arable farmland with many long deep pools, streamy runs and glides. With no lochs on the system, river levels rely on snow melt from the hills in the spring, and rainfall during the summer and autumn months.
