Overview

The 72,598-acre estate is part of the core area of the Cairngorms National Park, internationally recognised as the most important nature conservation landscape in the British Isles. The estate contains four of the five highest mountains in Britain; it also includes the upper watershed of the River Dee and remnant Caledonian pine forest of national importance. The outstanding wildlife and birdlife on this prime example of a Highland estate are characteristic of the northern mountainous area of Britain. The Lodge has been furnished to a high standard and offers guests the opportunity to relax in the elegant and comfortable atmosphere of this attractive sporting lodge.

Mar Lodge was voted top of the list in The Best Places for House Parties by Pete Irvine in his renowned publication 'The Best of Scotland'. Pete says 'Mar is among the best in the UK'. Short breaks are available Friday to Monday and Monday to Friday. Full weeks run from Friday to Friday. This is a fantastic destination for families to come on holiday and enjoy all the estate has to offer. The stunning ballroom can hold functions for up to 150 people has 2,500 stags heads adorned on the walls and ceiling is a unique location for a group function such as a wedding. For visiting anglers the lodge offers all the facilities you will require including drying rooms, rod box and very comfortable accommodation. To truly enjoy the Mar Lodge experience it is recommended that you stay in one of the accommodations at the lodge.

The fishings is ideal for newcomers to the sport offering easy wading and fishing with single-handed rods in high summer. A variety of fishing techniques can be deployed on fly rod which can offer stimulating and rewarding angling. Clay pigeon shooting can also be arranged by request. Tackle is available to hire and instruction is available.

The river and pools on the Mar Lodge Estate are the highest reaches fishable on the River Dee and arguably the most scenic. The fishing ranges from murmuring quiet pools between wooded banks to more vigorous pools amongst rugged open moorland and the majestic mountains of the Cairngorms. The fishings are normally divided between the upper and lower beats. The beats are at their most productive from May until the end of September. The pools can be fished in a variety of conditions although the extremes of low and spate conditions, as expected, can be difficult. When occasions like this occur the estate offers a wide variety of diversions with stunning hill walks and cycling routes as well as sightseeing opportunities or Munro bagging. The estate offers great potential for the sporting ‘MacNab’ where a salmon, grouse and stag are taken in a sporting day.

Accommodation is available in the lodge itself, please enquire.

"I just wanted to write to say that I had a wonderful time. It was my first time in Aberdeenshire and my first time salmon fishing and they were some of the most memorable days of fishing I have ever had, particularly in catching a salmon on Tuesday, which was an experience that will live long in the memory".
