The beat is largely double bank fishing on the Lower Dee and if two or more parties are fishing, the beat is split fairly between parties/individuals, but with 16 pools in all there is plenty of space and freedom from interference. If just two parties are fishing they alternate on right and left banks daily. There is one old stone fishing hut on the South bank which is accessible by car, limited vehicular access to the lower North bank pools and there is easy access on foot to the rest of the beat.
All newcomers to the beat comment on the lovely peaceful setting and that the double bank fishing adds that element of protected fishing that so many other beats do not have.
All pools on the right bank are readily fished from the bank, but the left bank is fished mainly with chest waders. The wading is generally easy and the water is excellent fly water. Spinning is allowed at the discretion of the Ghillie in the two slow deep pools only until April 15th but the beat ask that anglers do try fly first. Because of the nature of the beat on a big left-hand curve, it can be fished at all but highest river levels.
In the recent past little fishing has taken place before May to safeguard the spring run, so catch statistics are not truly representative of the potential catches. Night sea-trout fishing can be good in May and June.
The beat is normally let on a weekly basis together with Storkery Cottage which is five minutes walk or drive from the river. The three bedroom cottage is self catering and has one double/single, one triple single and one single room and a sofa bed in the living room. Bed linen and cooking equipment is provided. The bathroom has a shower and toilet and there is also a separate toilet. The whole Cottage is electrically heated and electricity is included in the price, as is Wifi. There is a log burning stove in the lounge.
The Ghillie is available to all anglers, and will normally row the boat for crossing the river or for fishing as required, but if two or more parties are fishing he will not be available for any one party exclusively.
