Last week

(Last Updated: Monday 08 August)

Last month was a difficult time for angling on the Annan with extreme conditions through low water and hot weather most of the time. The month started with a good flush of water which brought some salmon in and the start of the grilse run. Following the lift, fish were reported from the lower river and some of the middle beats as the river dropped and cleared but by the time the river fully cleared, it had run off and dropped back to summer level.

The hot weather continued into the middle of the month before a change to low pressure, much cooler temperatures and some heavy rain. Since then, the fishing has greatly improved, especially for trout and sea trout with some good numbers off small sea trout (1lb to 1.5lb) being reported from the upper river beats as well as some decent sized fish up to 4lb. There were also further runs of grilse following the change in weather and another good flush of water but again, the water didn't last long with only occasional anglers on the lower river reporting salmon and grilse.

During the last two weeks we've seen an improvement in the trout and grayling fishing although fly hatches have been mostly inconsistent. Some BWO's and caddis have been hatching during the afternoons with the best activity and dry fly fishing during late evening. Nymphing has been the most productive method during the day with spiders working well if there's any surface activity or hatches.

This will likely be the pattern throughout the rest of summer with afternoon hatches and consistent dry fly fishing picking up during September.

At the beginning of this month we had another lift in water which brought more fish into as far as the middle river but as before, the freshwater didn't last long with the river quickly dropping off again. Salmon fishing on the Annan during august can be very much dependant on water, although, fresh fish arriving will still run some of the lower river beats during low flows and at this time of year, there are usually fish coming in off the back of most tides. Last week during low conditions, Emilios Haralambous had Newbie Beat to himself most days landing a grilse of 6lb from Howes Corner and losing three other fish, as well as landing several sea trout.

Here's hoping for a more unsettled end to the summer and further rain. Small lifts are helpful to get fish running but what the river really needs is a substantial spell of heavy rain and a good 6ft flood followed by further rain!
