Overview

Cleuchhead near Brydekirk offers excellent fly-fishing all year round.

The fishing is fly only except in high water when spinning is allowed, but only when the spinning mark is covered at 0800.

There are over nine named pools on this two mile double bank beat, which are available for parties of up to six plus one rod that the owner retains for his own use.

Fished as two beats in daily rotation, 3 rods per beat rotating at 1p.m. each day (see booking conditions).

Anglers must agree rotation prior to commencing fishing.

Most of the pools are very streamy which ensures that they fish well at most heights of water and hold fish well. As the beat is only a couple of miles above the tide the majority of the fish caught will be very fresh.

The salmon fishing will be first class, given water, from August onwards with September, October and November normally the peak months. During 2004 over 300 salmon were recorded on this beat. The very abundant sea trout can be caught from May onwards with June and July the peak.

This beat is one of the best sea trout beats on the river so early booking is required to ensure you can fish. Although the beat is double bank most of the beat fishes best from the left bank with the exception of the top three pools which are best accessed from the right bank. In low water this bank can be accessed by wading across the river above Jimmies Stream, if the water is a bit high for this car access is possible by driving across the bridge at Brydekirk and taking the right turn up a narrow lane and following this about 2 miles.

During the salmon close season excellent Grayling fishing is also available at very reasonable rates. A number of very large bags of these fish have been made on this beat with one angler recording over 70 in one day on the fly in 2001.

The beat is normally let on a weekly basis but day tickets are sometimes available. The owner also owns a hotel in Annan and can provide a package of fishing with accommodation if anglers wish.

Whilst there is no ghillie on the beat, with 48 hours prior notice the owner may meet anglers on the beat and provide guidance as to the fishings.

Please note that the track surface is rough and if wet it is not advised to take non 4 wheel drive cars down, or have low ground clearance.
