Overview

The Applegarth beat starts a couple of miles downstream from Johnstone Bridge at Lochbrow farm and extends downstream to the junction with the Kinnel. There is a small section on this length which is not covered by the ticket at Jardine Hall It is mostly a double bank fishery although there is a piece in the middle which is right bank only, and a short section at the bottom which is right bank only. The river has very open banks at the top of the beat and further down it is more heavily wooded. There are over a dozen named pools with loads of fishy water in-between them. The lower end of the Kinnel is often ignored by anglers but contains some very good water for all species.

The sea trout fishing can be good from May onwards here with many fish caught on dries in the early part of the season with more traditional night fishing methods scoring better when the weather is warmer later on in the year. The largest fish of this beat in 2005 has been 13.5lbs.

The salmon fishing is good from September onwards but salmon will be present much earlier if there is sufficient water.

As with other beats on the Annan the brown trout fishing in April, May and June can be very good with very large brown trout being caught. 3 or four years ago this fish produced a cracking 8.5lb wild brown trout on a dry fly and the largest of 2005 so far has been a 6.5lb fish.
