Report covers March - early May:

Brown trout catches during April were patchy, however, when the temperature rose the fish started to respond to the fly fishers offers. Anglers fishing bait and spinning lures fared better with some decent catches coming from Loch Orasaigh and the west side of Lewis lochs. Loch Orasaigh, noted as an early but difficult loch, reluctantly gave up some of its quality residents. A visiting angler landed a 2lb-8oz trout whilst spinning with a Mepps lure from the bank and Robbie Bell, fishing out of the Stornoway Angling Association boat landed a nice 2lb-5oz brown trout on a Rapala lure. Several anglers fished the Grimersta system for an elusive springer during March and April, but none were seen.

Once May came in the fishing improved with the South Uist machair lochs producing some stunning brown trout. None more so than a 9lb-4oz fish from Loch West Ollay for Mark Hamilton on May 2. The trout, possibly the largest caught from the machair lochs was hooked on a Peter Ross.

Finally, after many days trying, Colin Macleod landed the first spring salmon to be hooked in the Outer Hebrides this season. The salmon was hooked during May 4 in the Sea Pool at Grimersta on a size 12 Stoats Tail, was netted by Matt Cook and weighed 14lb.
