River Management

The role of the Lochaber District Salmon Fishery Board.

The Board is a statutory body with particular responsibility for salmon and sea-trout fishery protection and enhancement in the Lochaber region.

The Board’s aim is to provide the maximum benefit to both the local community, tenants and visitors in enjoying this wonderful and precious natural resource, consistent with protecting and enhancing the migratory fish population.

The Board oversees and warrants a team of trained and qualified water bailiffs to undertake the vital task of fisheries protection over the entire region.

The Lochaber Board maintains a basic administrative and authorising function in support of its network of sub Boards and management groups throughout this large geographical region. Practical day-to-day management of fisheries is devolved to catchment level to these groups, but the Board oversees licensing and offers advice when required.

The Board responds to local and national fisheries consultations as a statutory consultee.

They identify local problems, appropriate remedial action and areas where further information is required. The LFT does not manage any rivers or wield regulatory powers, so the implementation of the plan depends on the support and collaboration of many other organisations and people.
