The Gaula River, now regarded as the best sport fishing salmon river in Europe, is part of the huge Trondheim fjord basin. It is one of approximately 20 rivers that will benefit hugely from the bag-net- fishing buy-out in the Trondheim fjord. Gaula is well known for its big salmon in addition to large quantities of medium size salmon and grilse averaging around 8,000 salmon during the three-month season (June to end of August). Throughout the season there is always the chance that you will catch "The Big One". In fact, a good number of fish in the 18 to 20kg (40-45lbs) category are caught every year.
Winsnes Lodge has joint fishing rights on the Malum/Winsnes beats and a number of others in cooperation with Gaula Fly-fishing Friends. The Winsnes Lodge rods participate in a rotation fishing system, whereby two anglers share a pool with a total of 16 rods. Eight large and long pools are offered, with 6 hours fishing on each pool. Approximately 50-60km (31-37 miles) from the sea, the beat is based 10 - 20km (6.2 - 12.4 miles) up river from the village of Støren. Generally recognized as among the best on the Gaula, the Gaula Salmon beats usually yield between 250 to 350 good size salmon per season. Average weight is around 5 - 6kg (11-13lbs). Exceptions occasionally occur, as in 2005, when fishing started very late due to extreme high water conditions at the Gaulfoss further down the river.
The Winsnes Lodge is a family-run guesthouse. The atmosphere is very relaxed and both food and service are excellent. It is located just 300m or so from the river, between the village of Støren and the town of Røros. Set in beautiful surroundings, it overlooks majestic hillsides where moose, deer and other animals roam. There is also an abundance of game birds and birds of prey. In addition to salmon fishing, shooting and hunting form an important part of the guesthouse's tradition. Winsnes Lodge has long been regarded as a place where guests enjoy their stay and can experience challenging fishing for big salmon or simply relax amidst beautiful and restful surroundings.
