Peter Fitzpatrick fishing the River Tummel.

There was no shortage of top quality spring salmon caught through the course of April. Loch Tay has fished well in recent weeks and it was good to see two more fish caught from the loch on Wednesday. It was a great start on the upper river on Monday with three fish landed. Successful beats included Upper Bolfracks and Upper Kinnaird. Upper Farleyer also produced a magnificent sixteen pounder on the fly - read more.

Last week also saw a twenty two pounder caught from the River Tummel and Dalmarnock Beat and this shows the size and quality of the spring salmon that run up the mighty Tay on a regular basis. This has to be an incentive for those anglers looking to make contact with that fish of a lifetime - read more. Anglers eager to cast a line on the Tay, permits start from a little as £8 for a day fishing - find fishing.

Kercock Beat - Had a great day out on kercock at the weekend. Gary the ghillie was very helpful and is a top man.

Dunkeld Beat - Very picturesque beat and easy to access. The ghillies were knowledgable, passing on excellent advice on where and what to fish with and were courteous and professional at all times. FishPal kept us up to date and and emailed us a few days prior to fishing.

Horncliffe - 1 fish caught at 12lb. Didn't expect too much at this time of year with the current weather conditions. Caught a lovely fish and had a good day on the banks. Tony is a knowledgeable guy who pointed out exactly where to fish and even helped improve my casting.

Tweedhill - First time back since Covid, all very safe and well managed. No hut or boats which is not a problem. Brian as always very helpful. It was a grand day out on the river.

Kate Mould fishing Balmoral Thursday 6th May.

The opening up of travel and accommodation gave us more rods on the water and this coincided with an evident run of fish all heading strongly to the upper part of the river - read more.

With rain forecast river levels should continue to rise. Raymond from Upper Blackhall always gives me his nature knowledge and he says "Now that we are into May it should start to warm up a bit and the old ghillies (which I am now one) used to say fan the birch buds are as big as moosies lugs that's the time to go on to the floating line. Find Dee fishing.

Congratulations to Kate Mould (pictured) who has caught her first ever fish, which is also the first of the season for Balmoral beat. She caught the fish in the Queens Pool after casting tuition from Gary Scott. She said "The fish put up a lovely fight and brought me to tears on the bank. A moment that will be with me forever"

Customer Feedback

Kincardine - Four fish caught and two lost in four days. Plenty of fishing for 3 rods, mixture of easy to challenging wading. Although the beat is compact it's nearly all fishable, subject to water height obviously. No Ghillie, beat maps in the hut are very informative.

Aboyne Water - Excellent water and facilities. Considering the recent flooding, the pools are all easily accessible and the pathways tidy. Chaz was a very friendly and helpful Ghillie.

18lb Fish River Spey

Blair Banks wiht a 6lb seatrout.

With travel restrictions finally lifted, the river resumed "normal" service. Most beats were back to welcoming their usual angling parties while the Association waters were delighted to see an uptake in permit sales from visiting anglers. Speyside feels alive again- read more.

From the "snapshot" of catches throughout the river it would be reasonable to say that April was a decent month with well over 100 spring salmon reported. Clearly that figure does not capture those beats that don't report and the fact that some beats were not fishing at all during the COVID travel restrictions. So, all things considered, the early spring fishing shows encouraging signs - Find Fishing.

Gordon Castle

After Monday's heavy rain the river has now dropped back in, although the water is very cold following some snow melt. The past couple of days there have been good hatches of blue duns but very few fish rising, probably due to the sudden drop in water temperature- read more.

Customer Feedback

Hoddom - Allan and Bill were brilliant. Allan showed me most of water and how to access it. I'll be back soon.
