July 2020

Fishing is seeing an unprecedented revival!

Rod licence sales have soared by more than 230% and another 200,000 people are now casting a line. Fishing is the perfect activity for all ages and has built-in social distancing as well as being ideal for mental health!

Anglers out on the river have been enjoying some excellent sport with salmon up to 23lb and sea trout to 15lb caught so far.

On the River Tay, salmon catches this month have exceeded those of July 2019 and numbers will likely well surpass the five year average. While this is an effect of delayed fishing due to lockdown, there are a lot more fish in the system - read more.

The Ness Fishery Board reported "Good numbers of Atlantic salmon arriving back to the River Ness, 22nd July."

Whilst everyone was having lunch Euan caught his first ever salmon on Crathes River Dee.

The Dee has had one of its best ever months recorded in the last five years. A total of 996 fish have been caught across the river this year and the largest of 23lb was caught on Invery and Tilquihillie.

Fish have been reported across all our river systems on FishPal. The Cumbrian Eden is fishing well and so is the River Annan with reports of salmon caught and reported throughout the river and good sized grilse seen.

Now accommodation providers are open, families are adding fishing experiences to their holidays. It's great to see the photographs of anglers fishing for the first time and catching fish, especially the younger generation. As the summer unfolds in front of us, there's no better time than now to start planning a fishing trip. Find Fishing.

The 2020 Safecation Report published today sees Scotland taking the first five places, making it the safest place for staycations.

The weekly FishPal report is now available to watch on Youtube and Facebook with Tom Carter chatting about fishing and prospects. This weeks FishPal Focus is Mark Paterson, a manager in aquaculture and fisheries management and owner of LTS Flyfishing UK & Ireland. You can watch Mark again on Youtube and Facebook.
