Yesterday's Catches - Today's River Levels - Tomorrow's Availability

Newsletter No 22

June 2020

As we head into the last week of June anglers are restricted as to where we can fish in Scotland with the 5 mile guideline rule still in place as we enter Phase 2 of the Scottish Governments release from lockdown plan. BREAKING: Today (24th June) it was announced that this travel restriction is anticipated to be eased from 3rd July. See the updates at this link.

Young anglers fishing Egton Estate.

Many of you have been close enough to be able to get out for a cast and the results have been interesting up and down the country. The arrival of some fresh water in our rivers has both helped and hindered things as rivers coloured up but were thankful of the rain, as we have had very little in recent weeks. With this week across the UK to be hotter than ever, early morning starts and late evening trips becoming the norm, if you are able to do so - something we would normally be trying to do at this time of year as the days stretch out in the middle of summer.

The other key lockdown requirement for many is that we start to see accommodation providers beginning to plan for potentially opening in July which will help. The overriding statistics on how the Corona Virus is doing has thankfully continued to show improving figures which is of course the important back drop to any further changes being made from the government.

Matties salmon returned on Egton Estate Yorkshire.

Bookings from August onwards are really starting to pick up and thank you for that. We are all desperate to get some decent fishing in before the season ends and quite rightly, the plans need to start being made now if we are to coordinate our diaries with availability on your favourite river.

Tight lines to all who manage to get out and for the rest of us, we are edging slowly to being able to join in the fun but not yet, just not yet - hopefully very soon.

Mark with a Tyne fish guided by James Stokoe.

The river has enjoyed a few small rises from the South Tyne recently and fresh fish have been moving in response but on many days low water has made fishing very tough for rods despite the steady trickle of fish creeping upstream.

Tyne reporter and guide Neil Lobban, fishing with guests on the main river at Dilston had the pleasure of netting two salmon in the same day for Gary Hutcheson from Teesside - read more.

Fishing at Warden with James Stokoe on Saturday the 13th, Phil Pallister landed an 8lb salmon from the North Tyne in very low water. On Sunday 14th Steve Jones landed a 5lb sea trout from the South Tyne on a single handed rod and size 14 fly - read more.

NHS Fly Auction

Ranald Hutton's winning fly, the NHS Warrior, has been generously donated by Fishing Mugs to raise money for the NHS. The money raised will be given to the Captain Tom Moore fund raising page for the NHS.

Ranald said "It is a symbolic fly, representing the colours of the NHS logo as a mark of respect to frontline health staff".

"Tying the fly took a long time. It is a very meticulous process and there are quite a lot of exotic materials involved. I am actually just glad I can still do it and my eyes are still ok."

Ranald was briefly crowned best in the world when he won the Fly Dressers' Guild competition for professionals in 1970, whilst only 16.

If you would like to own this fly please send in your bid to anne@fishpal.com no later than mid-day on Monday 6th July 2020.
