Overview

This stretch of the River Mourne offers some of the best salmon fishing in Ireland with a considerable run of salmon every year.  Local anglers estimate that between 1,000 to 1,500 fish are caught each year on Sion Mills water.

The Sion Mills water offers prime fly fishing water over an extensive range of pools. The most famous pools are the Gravenue, Purgatory, and Paddy’s Stream.  As the River Mourne is not a spate river good quality sport can be had in most water heights. The fishery offers great variation of pools and interest with both left and right bank throws.

The average size of salmon is around 2/3kg during the main run from mid June to the end of the season.   In the last few years salmon size has increased and up to 6kg are caught regularly. There is strong spring run of fish from April to the end of May.  June and July have a strong grilse run of fish, and good sport is had in August, September and October.

Wading is varied, in the more difficult places such as Liskey care is required. Anglers should wear a marine grade life vest at all times whilst fishing.  Local ghillies and guides can be provided with advanced notice, it is highly recommended to avail of this knowledge to enhance your chances of catching fish.

A double handed rod, chest waders and a wading staff are essential.  Shrimp flies are popular (local patterns exist) and it is good spinning and worming water in suitable conditions.  There is a good choice of accommodation provided locally to suit most budgets.

There is a limited number of day rods offered each day (see above), and they will fish alongside the local club, Sion Mills Angling Club.

There is good access for disabled anglers near the weir in the town of Sion Mills.

Why you need to fish here

This fishery is renowned as offering some of the best salmon fishing on the island of Ireland.  There are numerous pools to choose from that suit all water levels.  As there are a limited number of day tickets availble it is recommended to book in advance.  It is highly recommended to use a local guide to show you the fishery and enhance your chances of catching fish.  In order to preserve the salmon stock it is highly recommended to release all fish caught.
