Overview

River Faughan Anglers Ltd is a not for profit organisation which works to protect the environment, and control and develop angling on the River Faughan and its tributaries.

The tidal stretch of the river Faughan is situated within easy reach of the historic City of Derry/Londonderry and anglers may access both banks from car parks off the A2  Derry / Londonderry to Limavady Road.  Note - An under bridge pathway is provided on the Derry bank so anglers can avoid crossing the busy dual carraigeway.

The tidal stretch of the river consisting of 3.75km of double bank fishing starts 100m downstream of the water extraction barrage at Campsie. This dam known locally as "The Gates" slows the flow right down, and provides sufficient depth to hold large numbers of fish throughout the year. Below the impoundment the river is tidal and relatively shallow with the addition of a number of enhanced streams at the upper end, until Campsie Bridge above which there is deeper holding water, and from the bridge downstream the river features a series of deep bends and flats all of which are capable of holding salmon and sea trout.  The Fishery ends at the Railway Bridge and it's confluence with Lough Foyle

Anglers should be in possession of a valid Foyle Area licence and a Faughan ticket / permit whilst fishing.

Fishing begins on 1st April until 20th October.  Fly and spin fising only until 20th May, after which bait fishing is also allowed

Why you need to fish here

The Faughan is a renowned medium sized spate river fishery once famous for its profilic run of Sea Trout, but also has a run of Grilse and summer Salmon. In its upper reaches it is fast flowing, with streams, gravel fords and pools the predominant features.  As it descends the river slows as it passes through agricultural land, until it reaches Campsie, where there is a large dam, which is used to extract water for the nearby water treatment works. This dam known locally as "The Gates" slows the flow right down, and provides sufficient depth to hold large numbers of fish throughout the year.
