Wherwell Estate

Fishery

The water runs from Chilbolton Common up to Bransbury Common and includes many varied stretches - straight and twisty sections, open and wooded areas, shallows and deep pools, falls and groynes, fast and slow water etc.

Brown Trout are brought in and grown on in the Estate stew ponds to be released at 1.5-2 lbs".

There are 8 beats in all.

The River Keeper will show you the water, but will then be busy on his other Estate duties.

Beat 3 extends for about 540 m of double bank fishing and runs upstream from the Winchester Road. The beat benefits from the joining of the flow from Beats 4 and 7 and it is open on the lower half and shaded on the higher part. There is a fishing hut half way down the beat with car parking at the top and bottom.

Beat 4 extends for about 650 m of double bank fishing and is generally fairly deep and well shaded running from beat 5 into beat 3. There is car parking at Dublin Farm and a fishing hut near the top of the beat with a fishing shelter near the bottom.

Beat 5 extends for about 660 m of double bank fishing and runs from Beat 10 into Beat 4. It flows across the water meadows and is open and fairly shallow for most of its length with a few deeper hatch pools. There is a fishing hut in the middle of the beat and car parking nearby.

Beat 7 consists of two parallel carriers running from Beats 8 and 9 and joining into Beat 3 which total 870 m of double bank fishing. The fishing is on relatively narrow but deeper water and there is a large fishing hut in the middle of the beat with car parking at the bottom of the beat.

Beat 8 extends for about 620 m of double bank fishing, flowing from the main river and running into Beat 7. The beat has a mixture of wider shallow stretches and deeper narrower areas. There is a large fishing hut at the bottom of the beat, which is shared with Beat 9 and car parking nearby.

Beat 9 extends for about 580 m of double bank fishing, flowing from Beat 10 and running into Beat 7. The beat has a mixture of wider shallow stretches and deeper narrower areas. There is a large fishing hut at the bottom of the beat, which is shared with Beat 8 and car parking nearby and also a fishing shelter about halfway up the beat.

Beat 10 extends for about 510 m of double bank fishing and flows from Beat 11 into Beats 5 and 9. It is the shortest beat, but it is the widest beat allowing both banks to be fished, whereas most of the other beats are only fished from one side. There is a fishing hut near the bottom of the beat with car parking and the facilities of the Lake Hut nearby.

Beat 11 contains about 360 m of single bank fishing on the main River Test and another 310 m of double bank carrier which flows into Beat 10. This has some very attractive stretches which are well sheltered from the wind and a number of flow deflectors have been installed to create more holding areas for trout. There is a fishing hut at the bottom of the beat with a car parking area and a fishing shelter near the top of the beat.

There are also 24 season rods each having 18 days fishing with 6 guests and 12 half rods. Please contact the estate office for availability.
