Situated just South of the picturesque village of Witton le Wear, adjacent to the River Wear, the fishery offers some of the best stillwater angling in the North of England.
Access is just East of the A68, South of Witton Bridge, through the North Lodge of Witton Castle Country Park sat. nav. DL14 0DE. Located in picturesque parkland, there are two lakes of 3 and 5 acres, which offer clear banks with no back-cast hazards.
The main stocking is with Rainbow Trout, ranging from 2lbs minimum to a fishery record of 23lbs. In addition there is a good head of double figure Brown Trout (catch and release). Blue Trout also figure regularly in the catch returns.
A purpose-built lodge, open daily from 8.30, offers some tackle sales with a large range of locally tied flies, E.A. licenses, hot and cold drinks and toilet facilities. The car park is large and is situated adjacent to the lodge and within 100 yards of the fishing. There is a good selection of catch and release and take tickets available, including single, pairs and 4 hour options. Several try-it days are arranged throughout the season and coaching by qualified GAIA instructors can be arranged.
Juniors (Under 17) are catered for through membership of Bishop Auckland Angling Club. They receive subsidised fishing tickets and meet regularly for tuition, training and competitions.
Although there is no dedicated disabled angling, access is generally good, help and advice is provided by the fishery officers on duty. Disabled car parking is situated next to the lodge but vehicles can also be taken to certain parts of the lakesides – please ask at the lodge for advice regarding this.
The fishery officers are usually on hand to offer guidance and up-to-date advice. Within the lodge can be found copies of the fishery rules and up-to-date reports of the most successful flies and the best fish caught.
The fishery welcomes not only individual anglers but regularly hosts groups of anglers who wish to run their own competitions. These can take place at the weekend as well as during the week. We also hold a number of all night fishing events throughout the summer months - please check on the website or our Facebook page for details of these events.
