Newsletter November 2016

The FishPal website and phones have been busy this month with anglers enquiring about destinations to fish in 2017 and booking their fishing holiday for next year.

This month we are featuring places to fish in Scotland and as more availability is added to the website during coming weeks, we will be featuring places to fish in England in the December issue.

With Christmas only four weeks away and the start of the salmon season in Scotland six weeks away, booking next years fishing trip is high on everyone's agenda. Please give Tom a call in the office on 01573 470612 for places to fish and stay in 2017 for salmon, trout and grayling.

If you have not entered this years FishPal Malloch Trophy please contact me on 01573 470612 even if you are unsure whether to enter. I received a call from a lady last week and as a result, she is now a serious contender for the Malloch and Lady Haig's Bemersyde Award on the River Tweed.

River Tay

FishPal
Dr David Summers talking about Tay salmon.

With numbers consistently exceeding their 5 year average, the Tay is now recognised as the destination for spring salmon. From opening day on January 16th 2017, the chances of catching are high and those of us who brave the early spring weather increase their chances of a mighty Tay bar of silver.

Since 2008 the Tay have seen an increase in bigger fish entering the river, the likes of which the river used to be famed for. Fish over 32lb have been caught this year and David Summers of the TDSB says "During the next few years someone is going to catch a genuine 40lb plus fish".

With prices starting from as little as £22 for a days salmon fishing in January and February, including the services of a ghillie and fishing hut, we recommend you take a look at the following Spring beats: FishPonds; Ballathie; Meikleour; Dunkeld House; Dalmarnock. -

We hope you find something to tempt you and thank you for supporting the River Dee - read more.

Catch and Release Film

FishPal
Jess England playing a fish under the guidance of Bywell ghillie Terry Paton.

FishPal, The Angling Trust and The Atlantic Salmon Trust are working together to produce a short film on Catch & Release.

The filming took place on the exclusive Bywell Beat during the last 2 days of the Tyne salmon season. Despite almost mid-summer conditions, the anglers caught two magnificent 17lb fish and a beautiful silver 5 pounder.

Fittingly the first 17lb fish fell to 19 year old Jess England, the youngest of our anglers and the second brute was caught by 77 year old Tom Robinson! In the film Professor Ken Whelan shows how to release salmon and provides anglers with a set of simple rules to follow when releasing both silver and dark fish. The film will be widely available to all salmon anglers early in the New Year.

Dee Spring Fishing

FishPal
Spring fish caught on the lower Dee

The Dee welcomes anglers from all over the world who come in search of the ultimate prize of a spring fish taken on the fly. The character of the rivers fast-flowing, crystal clear waters are home to a succession of salmon pools that offer some of the finest fly water in Europe.

Ross Macdonald River Dee reporter says "The weather forecasters are predicting a cold winter, which will improve early spring fishing prospects for anglers on the Dee, especially on middle to lower beats"

Prices start from £25 for a days fishing with a ghillie and the facilities of a fishing hut. The following early season beats offer an excellent customer experience to fishing for salmon on the Dee: Tilbouries; Altries and Lower Drum; Lower Blackhall.

Please contact Tom & Ross in the office on 01573 470612 for more information on where to fish, including guides and instruction days.

Atlantic Salmon Trust

As the Trust approaches its 50th year, their focus has moved from the freshwater environment to saltwater as scientific indicators point to a major problem in marine conditions. Marine survival of migrating salmon has plummeted from over 15% twenty years ago to below 5% now. Researching the reasons for this decline and solving the problem is their priority and they are launching two major projects focussed on this objective which are Acoustic Telemetry Tracking of smolts, Environmental DNA(eDNA) and Salmon aquaculture which we will be featuring in more detail in future newsletters.

Tweed Spring Fishing

FishPal
Spring fish caught on Lower Birgham this year

Spring fishing starts on the first day of the season (1st February), offering anglers the chance of catching an early run salmon. 2,030 Springers were caught last year which is an increase on the previous year.

Beats in and around Kelso offer one of the best opportunities for early spring fishing, however Makerstoun 5 miles up stream of Kelso picked up 5 early February fish this year. Most beats from St Boswells to Norham will start seeing and catching sea-liced fish by mid March.

FishPal

Good spring beats for early season if the river is mid to high will be Upper North Wark, Upper Hendersyde and Makerstoun beats. For more information on 2017 Tweed Fishing and to book your salmon fishing holiday contact Tom in the office on 01573 470612.

We will be releasing the latest TSF available fishing for 2017 onto FishTweed before Christmas. The best way to keep an eye on what is being released is to register for a Rod Alert which will allow an email to be sent to you first thing in the morning if new fishing has been added to the site.
