Newsletter - March 2015   Yesterday's Catches, Today's River Levels, Tomorrow's Availability

Dear Angler

Rain combined with high tides improved the run on some rivers during the end of last month with catches showing a slight increase. Cold weather returned and fortune favoured those who braved the elements.

Twenty seven spring salmon up to 35lb were landed last week on the Tay. Fewer rods were casting a line on the Dee last week, but still they finished on a respectable 22 fish, the largest at 22lb on Lower Crathes and West Durris beat. Anglers fishing Tweed were disrupted with high winds, snow melt and rain in the West resulting in 11 fish up to 14lb for the week - latest fishing reports.

There has been more heavy, wintry showers across Scotland at the start of this week. The few hardy souls braving the cold snap have seen red letter days and fish up to 25lb.

Towards the end of this week we should see much milder and more settled conditions on many rivers - find fishing.

If you are casting a line in March send in your news and photographs to info@fishpal.com.

35lb Salmon on the Tay

Dunkeld Fish

Its good to see anglers catching salmon over 20lb in February and March. The first of the 30lb plus salmon for 2015 has been caught on the River Tay at Dunkeld House Fishing. Mark Ogilvie’s cracking 35lb fish was taken on the harle using a Blue & Silver Kynoch in the gauge pool. After a 20 minute battle the fish neared the boat, giving Mark and head ghillie Gordon Pollack the first good sight of the fish, it was then they realised the size. After quickly weighing the fish in the new 'fish friendly' McLean rubberised mesh net the salmon was returned. Speaking with head ghillie Gordon Pollack last night the beat lost another big fish last weekend - read more.

Red Letter Day on the Spey

One of Four Fish

Congratulations to Melville McDonald from everyone at FishPal. "Very, very occasionally a 'red letter' day comes along in the course of your fishing life. Today was one of those days for me with four beautiful fresh Spey springers hooked and landed in the course of 4 hours on the 'first day of spring' at the Rothes & Aikenway beat of the River Spey. Ghillie Robbie Stronach was on hand to net the first and fourth and the other two I landed myself. A day to remember for a long time to come on - Rothes and Aitkenway". Thank you to Melville McDonald and Don Milne for the photographs of your day.

20lb plus salmon in March
