Sea trout numbers are picking up with 95 reported to the website last week and those anglers that are serious about these wonderful fish are fishing through the night to get the cream of the sport. We now look forward to the summer and to good runs of grilse and sea trout. Latest FishDee availability.
FishTay reported improved catches on the river of 107 salmon up to 34 pounds for last week. The signs are good with more multi sea wintered 20 pound salmon seen and being caught by anglers. Sea trout numbers too are increasing with 32 reported for last week. Latest FishTay availability.
Another reasonable week on Tweed with 58 salmon and 41 sea trout reported, which is not bad considering the unsettled river conditions which caused the river to rise and colour-up. Now summer is finally here it's time to scale down your equipment and concentrate on fly presentation. Our specialists this month are Gary Scott and Malcolm Anderson.
Shakespeare consultant, casting instructor and guide, Gary Scott says "Its now time to start using your full floating Spey lines as many rivers are reaching summer lows and water temperatures are fluctuating between 40 to 50 degrees. If you like to add a poly tip to your spey line, choose tips with a slower sinking density. Anglers using a shooting head system use your full floating or change to a slow sink tip for areas of the river with faster flows". When night fishing for sea trout Gary uses a single handed 10ft 6/7" rod with a full floating line.
To get the best from your fishing experience why not book a casting lesson or if you have the time go and practice in a field or local river before your trip, it will pay dividends. If you would like to learn or improve your casting, Gary Scott is running a spey casting course in October on the River Tay.
Malcolm Anderson, Managing Director of Caledonia Fly Company recommends tried and tested salmon and sea trout patterns this month. He has a selection of prolific sea trout flies for rivers and estuaries, including salmon patterns that have proved fantastic catchers in the past few seasons. Please follow the link to read about the best flies to try for June.
