Fishing on the River Usk
The River Usk's reputation for its quality wild brown trout
and salmon fishing goes back over many years and it is still
regarded as one of Britain's finest wild brown
trout rivers. The quality of the fishery has
improved significantly following excellent work
being undertaken by the Wye and Usk Foundation.
In recent years it has been Wales' best performing
salmon fishery.
The Usk's fishing season starts in early March and with
reasonable water and conditions fishes straightaway
with early hatches of 'grannon' producing wonderful
trout activity during the day. Salmon fishing comes
into its own with the first floods of April/May
and can produce some high quality fish.
The middle beats of the Usk are accessible from
London (2½ hours), Cardiff (35mins), Birmingham (90mins),
Bristol (50mins) and Swindon (1 hour).
