Some beats on the Tweed have had a very positive start to their fishing season with encouraging catches from Feb to early May. Hendersyde and Sprouston have had a good start to the season, along with Upper North Wark under the guidance of Head Boatman Martin Ritchie.
There is still some availability on Tweed for the month of May and prices start from £30 for a day's salmon fishing and £7 for trout fishing.
We don't know what the summer weather patterns will bring, we do know that May and June are good months to go fishing on Tweed.
8 year old Finlay Walker with his first ever salmon
Bright cloudless skies, rising day time temperatures and a strong easterly wind made fishing on Tweed hard work last week. Last Friday I spoke with "Ginge Palmer" at Tweedhill who was enjoying the cloud cover. By 11am his anglers had caught 2 fresh fish off the 9am high tide. Beats further up the system were catching sea liced fish on Saturday.
Conditions this week are looking more favourable than last with more "normal" May temperatures. A bit of rain will certainly liven the water up, but how much and how it will affect the river, is difficult to say. Beats worth a cast are on the lower river; Tweedhill, Horncliffe, LadyKirk, Tillmouth, Milne Graden and Bluestone - find fishing.
Small numbers of sea trout are beginning to arrive, expect this to build up by the end of this month. With the winds trout fishing has suffered though the Upper river may have faired better.
If you have any queries relating to this season on Tweed and have not yet found fishing that suits please do feel free to get in touch. We also have some great accommodation providers in the valley from hotels to holiday cottages and houses offering a selection of facilities catering for everyone.
