Description

Situated between the historic abbey town of Melrose and the village of Gattonside, Lower Pavilion offers one and a half miles of double bank salmon fishing in a stunning location with panoramic views of the Eildon Hills.

There are eight named pools, three of which fish well at low water and the others are deep pools with fishing particularly productive in high water.

Fishing is a variety of bank, boat and relatively good wading offering the salmon angler an excellent selection of water. At the top of the beat is Generals, which is a good holding pool with some excellent lies and below which lies the Cauld, a deep holding pool which is excellent fished from a boat in medium to high water. In the middle of the beat is Lower Bridge and Island Stream leading to the Battery, a long pool with fast streamy water. Cowies is the bottom pool, a very productive deep holding pool which can be fished from both banks.

The beat normally fishes six rods as three two-rod beats which rotate at lunch time each day. During July and August when the water is low only four rods will be let, if the river is well above summer level an additional two rods may be let. There is an experienced, full time ghillie on the beat. However, during July the ghillie will be undertaking bank maintenance on the beat and will not be fully available to give assistance.

A fully-equipped, modern fishing cabin with wc is situated on the north bank of the river. There is good vehicular access to it and parking at the hut. A pedestrian footbridge links both banks in the middle of the beat.
