Last week

(Last updated: Thursday 31st May)

30th May - Friars Carse Beat. Latest info i have from the beat is that there are a good number of sea trout in the system with John Cameron again doing well he had four last night to 3 lbs dropped 6 more. Salmon have been showing in the Island Pool, so if they are there they are also most certainly in the other pools as well, you just need to find them in the taking mood.
I'm back up there myself in about 2 weeks time so hopefully conditions will remain favourable. If you haven't fished the beat it's well worth giving it a go, there are fish to be had if the conditions are right.
Don't forget to contact the hotel or myself if you want any information on the beat and any of the Fly fishing & Fly Tying courses that we run, the next one is in July and there may still be a few spaces left.

May Report Burgh Water at Dumfries
May started with wet and windy conditions but it soon settled down. With warm weather fish were caught, salmon, seatrout and big rainbows. The Purls fishes well after a small rise and John Cameron had a 7 lb salmon and lost one with the fly. Yes, it was that fly again, the Willie Gun. Also a visitor, Mr Dodds, had a 10 lb salmon in the College Pool and he told me a good number of fish were showing in the pool. He caught his with the worm. With the warm weather and settled conditions, seatrout are here in good numbers and they have been spotted in most pools, some big ones too. Some have been caught. David Cuthbert had 3 up at Lincluden at evening time with small flies, well done to Dave. At St Michael's Bridge, a good holding pool for salmon in low water, 2 large rainbow trout were caught, wait for it – one 10lb and the other 6lb! - incredible. Other trout have been caught including tiger trout, some also big and some have been caught at the Castledykes. May is the time for departing smolts, I've seen them splashing about in all pools. Surely it will be good in a few years' time. We all know what happens when they get to the sea. Night time seatrout fishing has started. Go and have a go. To hook a good seatrout at night can be very exciting. Seatrout are there, if you are not sure and want some advice, get in touch with me. Nothing beats night time seatrout fishing, it's the best.

Catch any fish or any fishy stories, give me a ring.
