Last week

(Last updated: Thursday 21st December)

21st December - Grayling at Friars Carse. A few anglers have been out trying their luck with mixed results especially after these recent weather changes. Still some reasonable size grayling have been coming to the net the best reported so far is around the 40cm mark so a nice fish in good condition.
If the weather continues to hold over the festive period it will be worth a trip out and cast a line and blow the cob webs off, there are some good sized grayling in the stretch.

Wishing you all a very happy Christmas & a prosperous New Year.

End of season report fro Dumfries Burgh water.
It's time to put the rods and reels away. November – what a month, what a year. It must be a record – its never stopped raining! Flood after flood. There have been only been a few fish caught. Billy Clawson caught a 22 pounder at the Wee Green on the fly – well done to him. Also two salmon were caught at the Boat House with the worm, biggest 8lb.

To summarise the season, Spring fishing is improving with good numbers caught. Summer fish are also on the increase with good runs of fish with each tide with most fishers getting fish, some big too. Seatrout were also good when the river was low. It was a wet Summer and Autumn. Salmon, grilse and seatrout ran straight through, though some fish were caught and lost, with few rods out. The back end again was very wet, the Burgh water was mostly high with few fish showing and just the odd fish caught. It will be remembered as a good Spring and early Summer for fish, then the rain came for the rest of the season. Bring on 2018!

I hear we have been promoted to Category 1 for next season. It will bring more rods onto the river, catches will improve. Enjoy your Christmas. See you all in the Spring.

3rd December - Friars Carse Report. Was up at the hotel for the last 3 days of the season and with the river dropping back things looked good. Saw plenty of fish on the first day some coloured others not so bad, Ray Dry had a fish of about 5lb on the fly from the Riding Stone. Weather turned cold overnight with frost on the ground and with a north wind it was cold for the next few days. Regular guest at the hotel Ashley Nicholls had a fish of about 12lb whilst fishing the worm on the Ledges, Peter Vale had a strong pull whilst coming down the Riding Stone which unfortunately didn't result in a fish.
A number of fish, some quite large seen in the Farm Pool on the last day but they weren't in a taking mood.
Just waiting for the final figures to come in but it looks like the beat has had a good year with 40 salmon (best 25.5lbs) & 17 grilse.
Lets hope that 2018 season is even better.

Now's the time for grayling to come into their own & there certainly are some good size ones throughout the beat, if you never fished it why not come along and give it a try.
The Hotel is running a Grayling Competition on Sunday 25th February 2018, contact the Hotel (01387 740388) or myself (07760 884450) for more details.
First course of 2018 will be on the 26th, 27th & 28th February again we will be including fly tying so if you fancy trying your hand at that just give the Hotel a call.
Don't forget any photos of your grayling catches that you want uploading just forward them to me along with details of where caught and method used.

Wishing you all a very happy Christmas & a prosperous New Year.
