Last week

(Last updated: Friday 15th September)

15th September - Friars Carse Beat. Just back from 4 days at the hotel running a course and guiding for some clients and despite the changing river levels it was good to see that there were a good number of salmon showing most days. Fish were seen throughout the beat but most seemed to be in Island, Marsdens and Policemans although a couple of big fish were seen in the Riding Stone.
After giving visiting angler Peter Ayton some advice on the river and where best to go given the conditions it wasn't long before he managed to hook into and successfully land a lovely silver fish of around 12lb on a Toby whilst casting from the steps of the Riding Stone (see the photo page), he also had another salmon come short to the fly whilst fishing down at Policemans.
Keith Irons and his brother Alastair were out with me Thursday morning and he managed a fish of around 13lb taken from the Farm Pool on a Rapala, only photo of this was as it was released. An even bigger fish was seen further down the run but wasn't in the mood for taking.
There seem to be plenty of fish in the system it just needs anglers on the river and I'm sure that the catch rate will go up.
If you've never fished the beat it's well worth it, fly, spin or worm all will work well on their day.
Don't forget our fly fishing/tying course at the hotel November, give the Hotel or myself a call for more information.

4th September - Friars Carse Beat. Regular guests staying at the hotel had some good sport, seeing a good number of fish, hooking some and others winning the battle. Tony Farrell landed a nice clean fish of 10 lb at Marsdens pool on worm he also got snapped up by a very big fish that he couldn't stop also on worm 28th August
Peter Behan caught a 7lb grilse on worm at the Riding Stone 30th August & Cathy Behan landed a 8lb grilse at Policemans Pool 31st August. Peter Behan landed a  7 1/2lb grilse at the Riding Stone 1st September. All the rods also had brown trout upto about the 2lb mark, so all in all a good weeks fishing.
I'm up there myself next week so fingers crossed the conditions are good and the fish are in the taking mood.

4 September

August Report. The Burgh fished well throughout the month with lots of showers to keep the water up and fish were running with plenty caught and lost. On the 8th I caught two salmon and lost two in the Wee Green, biggest 10 lb. Further upstream Richard Little had a 5lb grilse at the Cairn Mouth. The next day he had a nice seatrout at the Purls. On the 11th I caught a 5 pounder at the Castledykes with seal damage;, it had a scar down is flank, half its' tail was missing. It fought very hard, and was returned. On the 12th Billy Clawson had 3 grilse after the tide, very fresh, and Lee Thompson a 5 lb fish very fresh, on the worm at the Cairn Mouth. On the 18th Billy Clawson had a 5 lb salmon on the worm with sea lice at the Wee Green. On the 24th Kevin Kirkpatrick caught at 10 pounder again fresh on the worm. He said plenty of fish were showing in the pool. On the 25th two fish were lost and one seatrout caught. On the 28th Billy Wallace had a 6lb salmon at the Wee Green spinning. I also heard salmon were caught and lost at the Purls, possibly by visitors. Upstream has done well. Sanquhar is fishing well with lots of fish caught and also other beats down stream catching fish. Fish are well spread out throughout the river, but still few rods out to catch them. If you are looking for a back-end week or a few days fishing, try the Nith, its fishing well and its no too expensive. Speak to Tom Carter at Fishpal, have a go. Tight LInes Allan.

30th August - Friars Carse News. Just a brief note from the hotel today that one of the party who are fishing there this week has had a nice 12lb fish whilst spinning. Alan Gray has had a 5lb grilse on a Rapala from the Ledges and lost 2 more and a salmon of about 12lb down at Policemans Pool. He reports seeing a good number of fish in the beat it just needs some settled water.
