Description
The Drumlanrig Castle fishings is within the Queensberry Estate (one of the Buccleuch Estates) in the grounds of Drumlanrig Castle near Thornhill, Dumfries & Galloway. The
private beats of the Drumlanrig Castle fishings offer approximately 7 miles of exclusive Sea Trout and Salmon fishing across four defined beats (Lower, Middle, Upper and
Nith Linns). The river broadens from a rocky gorge into a mainly graveled riverbed with suitable pools and reaches offering good accessible fishing for both Salmon and Sea
Trout. The four beats vary in length but are balanced for quality. There are 28 named pools across the four beats.
The Upper Beat offers a flatter gravel bed with more open bankings and not quite as deep as the other beats making wading easier. It runs from Dovecote Knowe Pool to just
above Drumlanrig Bridge at Bell Pool where it conjoins with the more gorge-like terrain of the Nith Linns. Several of the pools are very deep (Bridge Pool can reach a depth
of 15 ft and Mermaids Pool 8 ft). Again thigh waders should be more than suitable except at the back end of the season after considerable rain. Likewise, double-handed rods
are useful when the river is high. Vehicular access is possible although this can be difficult when the ground is soft underfoot. However, the fishing hut is fairly close
to the Estate road at Bught's Pool along which parking is available. A key for the hut can be obtained from the Estate Office.
Children's tickets are available for a flat rate of £10.00 per day per child (not yet available online). Children are classed as aged 16 and under and must be
accompanied by a responsible adult. No rod sharing is permitted and adult's who wish to fish alongside, must purchase their own adult permit. The loyalty card (not yet
available online) allows 1 rod 6 reduced price fishing trips within the specified fishing location and dates. Please note this must be paid fully in advance and is not
transferrable or refundable and cannot be carried over the agreed dates. Catch limits are the first 2 fish for children and the first 4 fish for adult ticket, and catch
details must be returned to the Sporting Office by the end of each fishing day. Contact the Sporting Office for further information on child, evening and loyalty tickets
and booking.
Loch and coarse fishing are also available on the Estate.
