Description
The Drumlanrig Castle fishings is within the Queensberry Estate (one of the Buccleuch Estates) in the grounds of Drumlanrig Castle near Thornhill, Dumfries & Galloway. The
private beats of the Drumlanrig Castle fishings offer approximately 7 miles of exclusive Sea Trout and Salmon fishing across four defined beats (Lower, Middle, Upper and
Nith Linns). The river broadens from a rocky gorge into a mainly graveled riverbed with suitable pools and reaches offering good accessible fishing for both Salmon and Sea
Trout. The four beats vary in length but are balanced for quality. There are 28 named pools across the four beats.
The Lower Beat begins at the Nith Bridge at Thornhill, moving upstream through a series of 6 pools and glides to its boundary with the Middle Beat where the River Carron
joins the Nith. The pools vary in depth from 3 ft at Virgin Pool through to Bullockholm which can reach a depth of 12 ft and is probably the best pool on the river. There
are excellent fast flowing reaches and the Beat is best accessed from the east bank. Chest and thigh waders may be needed towards the back end of the season, although
during the summer month's thigh waders are sufficient. Double-handed rods are useful when the river is high. The river bed is gravel (with some occasional rock) and wading
is not usually difficult. There is suitable vehicular access to the fishing hut, for which a key can be obtained from the Estate Office.
