Three local anglers; Robbie Bell, Walter Duncan and Norman Duncan had a nice catch of brown trout whilst fly fishing on Loch nan Ritheanan during the evening of Tuesday, May 7th. Between them they landed four well conditioned brown trout in the 2lb - 3lb range. The killing flies were bumbles and muddlers.

Grimersta recorded another spring salmon on Saturday, May 11th. A local angler fishing a cone-head fly in the 1st Stream landed and returned a fresh-run 9lb cock fish.

The Graeme Gould party (4 anglers) had a thoroughly enjoyable week fishing the brown trout waters of South Uist. Between them they landed and returned 112 brown trout the heaviest of which weighed 4lb. Graeme was the captor of the 4lb fish which is his heaviest wild brown trout ever. Graeme tempted the big fish with a size 10 loch ordie. The party had two days fishing on Loch Dun na Cille, landing 19 brown trout, two of which were over 2lb, two days on Mill Loch with the heaviest being 1lb-4oz, a day on Frasers Loch with the heaviest weighing 1lb-8oz, one day on Loch Upper Kildonan with the best being 1lb and a day on Loch Bornish where they landed 10 trout, including the four pounder. All the trout were taken on bumble patterns and the loch ordie.

The Outer Hebrides Fisheries Trust "Catch & Release" Fish of the Month competition for April was won by Murdo Macaulay. Murdo landed and released a lovely 2lb brown trout whilst spinning with a Mepps lure on a North Tolsta hill loch.

Anglers interested in seeking out an elusive spring salmon should give Simon Scott at Grimersta (01851-621-358) or Donnie Whiteford at Garynahine (07920-096-983) a call. Fishing on both these Estates is free of charge up until June with both Fisheries being fly only and each having a strict Catch & Release policy for spring salmon and sea trout.
