Overview

This water offers excellent angling opportunities over both banks of the main stem of the Cree. The fishing is situated in the middle of the catchment and offers an exciting range of waters suitable for fly and spinner (no bait fishing).

The Galloway Estate water consists of three beats, with capacity for three rods per beat. Rods fishing more than one day will rotate beats every day to ensure that anglers have the opportunity to fish a variety of pools. There are 20 named pools, which includes the well-known Leary Pool and Burnfoot amongst others. Cunningham's Ford is widely considered to be amongst the best of the holding pools on the river. For fly fishing, the House Pool, the Upper and Lower Leary Pools and the Challoch Run are recommended.

Due to the beats only being lightly fished over the years, the catch table does not give a true indication of fish numbers. Given water, the river will fish from around mid-April onwards with a good count of fish through May and June. The beats fish best from the end of July onwards, with the fishing towards the end of the season being most productive. As with all of the Galloway rivers, the best fishing conditions follow a spate.

The largest salmon to be landed in recent years was 26lb but in 2012, six fish of between 17lb and 20lb were caught. Brown trout and sea trout are slowly increasing in numbers but no records are available. Rods have been asked to include them in their returns since 2014.

Flies: Ally Shrimp, Cascade and other local patterns.

The season runs from 1st March to 14th October

Extent of fishing: 5 miles double bank fishing divided into 3 Beats, and maximum of 3 rods.
