Coarse Fishing in Galloway

Drumlockhart Caravan Park, Leswalt

A short drive from the Luce catchment, Drumlockhart water is essentially a trout loch but also had a good head of sizeable carp. Rarely fished for by anglers, the carp will fall to surface baits. For details, please visit reception or telephone 01776 870232.

Whitefield Loch, Glenluce

Recently redeveloped, with new access platforms, good disabled access and car parking facilities, Whitefield Loch provides a great day out for anglers. The loch has a good population of fin perfect perch, up to 2lb. Following an initial stocking of pike into the loch around two years ago, a further stocking was undertaken earlier this year. Individual pike of up to 20lb have been caught in the loch although jacks tend to be more common. If you have family with you there is also a woodland walk with interpretation panels. There are plans to provide disabled boat access in the near future. For details of permits and the monthly fishing competition, please telephone 01581 300697.

Woodhall Loch, Castle Douglas

As well as coarse fishing in the Kirkcudbrightshire Dee and Loch Ken (see Kirkcudbrghtshire Dee's 'Where to fish' page for details) There is a number of very good still waters in the surrounding area. One of the best known is Woodhall Loch. It is situated just to the west of Loch Ken and supports pike, perch and roach. Very large bags of roach can be taken on the loch but it seems as if the pike strongly affect the roach distribution on some days and then only a few roach are taken. The roadside swims are good for pike, with reports of pike to 22lb from this area. Fish at a distance for roach but closer for perch. Tickets are for the roadside swims only with the far bank being private. Tel: 01644 450281 for details.

Newton Loch, Gatehouse of Fleet

This small lochan is situated adjacent to the A75 just west of Gatehouse (after the Skyreburn) and can be clearly seen from the A75. The water holds plentiful roach, rudd and perch and also a small number of tench. There are pike to 9lb. Access is across the field from the farmhouse, where tickets are available.

Tickets available from reception.

Clatteringshaws Reservoir, New Galloway

Clatteringshaws Reservoir can provide good sport when the conditions are right. The water supports pike and perch as well as trout. Fishing effort is generally low on this water in comparison to nearby waters but it can produce good fish given the right conditions. The more easily accessible east side of the loch produces the best catches. The length of the shoreline is over 5 miles - plenty of room for bank fishing! Tickets are available by contacting Galloway Guns & Tackle, Arthur Street, Newton Stewart (Tel: 01671 403404) or JR Hopkins Grocers, High Street, New Galloway, Nr Castle Douglas (Tel: 01644 420229).
