Fishing regulations

Anglers should be aware of the legal requirements before you book fishing. There are conservation codes, individual beat and booking agency conditions to consider. Fundamental legislation requires anglers to have written permission to fish for salmon and sea trout. The season extends from the 11th February until 30th September.

River conditions

The following Salmon Conservation Policy issued by the Findhorn District Fishery Board must be complied with.

CATCH & RELEASE

Anglers are requested to release: -

* All salmon over 9 lbs / 28 inches (4 Kg / 72 cm)
* All stale and gravid fish
* As many hen fish as possible
* All sea trout

RELEASE RATE

Anglers are asked to achieve a minimum of: -

* 70% of salmon under 9 lbs and 50% of grilse (any fish of 4 lbs or less) caught.

KEEP RATE

Guidance only: - Release Rate above should take priority

* 1 salmon (under 9 lbs) or 4 grilse per rod per 6 days
* Further grilse can be taken provided the required release rate is achieved and maintained.

METHOD

* Before 1st May, fly fishing is encouraged
* Most beats are fly only all season. From 1st May it is mandatory.
* Pinched or barbless hooks are recommended. Avoid using triple hooks.

Fishery conditions

Individual owners may also have their own individual conditions, such as the hours that fishing is allowed on that beat, provision of ghillies (if any) and what fishing methods you can use.
