(Last updated: Monday 25th September)

Ian Neale reports from Altyre Estate for week ending September 23rd as follows :

River levels were at a perfect fly fishing height for the start of the new fishing week. However, we saw heavy rain falling all day over the River Findhorn catchment on Wednesday and into Thursday morning. By Thursday, fishing on the Lower River was impossible and levels peaked at around four foot nine inches on the Forres gauge and started to fall away and clear throughout the day. By Friday, levels had fallen back and water clarity was in good order and at a good fishable height for us on Altyre.
Ian Neale had something of a red letter day on Monday with a total of four fish hooked and released. He caught two Summer salmon of around 15lbs and 16lbs from Palamore Island Pool, another summer salmon of around 18lbs from Roan Pool, plus a fresh grilse of around 4lbs from the Roehillock Pool. On Tuesday, Charlie and Rick Henritz plus daughter Laura, were over from Michigan in the USA and salmon fishing for the first time in Scotland. Later in the day, Rick finally managed to hook and release a fresh grilse of around 4lbs from the Roan Pool.
On Wednesday, Leslie Tyson had another cracking day and hooked and released a total of six fish up to 18lbs. He caught a fresh grilse of around 5lbs and a fresh salmon of around 9lbs from the Garden Pool, plus a grilse of around 3lbs from Palamore Pool. Later on in the day he managed to hook and release another three fish of around 5lbs, 8lbs and an a large cock fish of around 18lbs, all from the Roan Pool on his Altyre Dog tube fly. Ian Neale hooked and released a fresh grilse of around 3lbs, also from the Roan Pool.
By Thursday, the River Findhorn had risen after heavy rain falling over the catchment and was running high in a big and dirty spate, making the beats unfishable. However, by Friday the river levels had fallen and cleared and looking in good order for fly fishing. Leslie Tyson caught and released three fish of around 3lb, 4lbs and 5lbs all from the Roehillock Pool and another salmon of around 10lbs from Roan Pool later in the afternoon. Ian Neale hooked a released a fresh grilse of around 4lbs from the Roehillock Pool.
On Saturday river levels were in perfect condition, falling back slowly throughout the day and with good water clarity. Ken and Linda Koretz were over in Scotland for their holiday, visiting from San Francisco in the USA, having booked a day of instruction and guiding on Altyre Estate. They soon got into the swing of Spey casting and enjoyed some great sport. Linda Koretz hooked and released a fresh grilse of around 5lbs from Palamore Pool and then another grilse of around 4lbs from the Soldier's Hole Pool. Ken Koretz hooked and released a fresh grilse of around 3lbs from Roehillock Pool and later in the day another fish of around 5lbs from the Roan pool. Leslie Tyson managed to hook and release another two fish, one of around 8lbs from Roan pool and another fresh grilse of around 4lbs from the Roehillock pool. Ian Neale : ian@speycaster.net

Fishing Report for w/e 23rd Sept 2017 Lethen
At the start of the week the water levels were good and then rain came and there was high water peaking at very high on Thursday, but by Saturday it had fallen back to a good fishing height. The Dobbs party on the Dunearn Beat did well with a fish on each day of the week.
On Monday there was an 8lb salmon from the March Stream and then on Tuesday William Dobbs scored his first salmon with a 3.5lb grilse also from the March Stream. On Wednesday Matthew Dobbs joined the scoring with a 3lb grilse from the Haugh Stream and Bruce Walker safely released a 9lb salmon from Nettle Hole on Thursday. Friday brought the biggest fish of the week on Dunearn when Matthew Dobbs landed an 18lb salmon from the tail of Polnachesse with the river still high. Angela Walker had a 3.5 grilse from the tail of Rowlands on Friday and Jean Matterson completed the scoring for the week with a 2lb grilse from the Haugh Stream on Saturday.
The Kennedy party in Dulsie Cottage also got off to fast start on Monday with Colin Apperley landing a 12lb salmon from the Loop and Frank Kennedy safely releasing a 20lb salmon from Dalnashaugh in medium water conditions. The fish were not cooperating in the middle of the week but the freshen up on Thursday got things going again and there were two more fish for Frank Kennedy on Friday with a 5lb grilse from the tail of Daltra and a 10lb salmon from the middle of Dalnashaugh. There was plenty of action on Saturday with Frank Kennedy landing a 6lb salmon from the tail of Island pool and losing another 4 fish. Colin Apperley also had more success with two more fish, the largest a 10lb salmon from the tail of the Island Pool.
On Wednesday Dave Carson was out on Altnahara. He started at bottom end and worked upstream to Black and at the tail end of Deadman's caught a 10lb cock fish resplendent in his Autumn colours. It put up a good fight and was safely returned into the pool
