Finavon Castle Water (FCW) is a well known middle beat of the South Esk, with a reputation for excellent sea trout and autumn salmon fishing. With access off the A90 main road the fishery is easy to get to from anywhere in Scotland or further afield.

The fishery is divided into four exclusive and private two-rod beats, where tenants can enjoy undisturbed personal access to pools. Each beat has its own private vehicle access, parking and a warm and comfortable hut. The setting for each of the four beats provides superb opportunities for enjoying wildlife in an unspoiled and exclusive natural environment. A feature of FCW is the woodlands and riverside wildflowers giving a sense of tranquillity and rural peace – the ideal setting for sometimes quite challenging salmon and sea trout fishing.

The four beats – Milton, Castle, Indies & Bogardo – are offered on a 24 hour basis from 0700 on the agreed date. Each beat has at least two major holding pools, some of which are justly famous South Esk Pools, such as Tyndals, Willows, Red Brae, Melgund and Indies.

Prices for 2017 are based on rod-per-day rates.
A. 16/2 to 1/4 £40 per rod day
B. 3/4 to 2/9 £70 per rod day
C. 4/9 to 31/10 £80 per rod day

People renting three days or more will be eligible to discounts of at least 5%

Recent years have not treated South Esk salmon and sea trout stocks well. Indiscriminate over- fishing by coastal nets near Montrose has severely impacted on numbers of incoming adult fish, especially in April, May and June. In 2016, the first year of the current lay-off of coastal nets, we noted a 300% increase in salmon caught in June, over 150% more in July and a most encouraging show of big autumn fish in September and October. While catches did not take off in 2016 as some people thought they would, we noted an encouraging new pattern of salmon in FCW pools, from the beginning of the season in March in every month through to October. There is now a strong basis for improved runs in future years and of all Scotland's rivers, the South Esk is set to benefit most from the end of coastal netting.
FCW offers a delightful natural environment for the enjoyment of our visitors. The variety of pools and streams – with two new pools formed by the massive floods of December 2015 – combined with excellent holding potential and the ideal distance from the sea give anglers opportunities to catch both salmon and sea trout in most conditions.

We prefer to let fishing to groups for multiple days, but single rods are also welcome on the understanding that they may be fishing with another rod.
