Overview

Borrowston Beat is superb fly-fishing water which fishes well in a wide range of heights.

The Gannets, with its bank of tall trees behind, is sheltered from cold easterly winds. Going downstream the Ringstone, fished from midstream, is an easy wade over shingle. Robb's Hole and Broken Tree are only fishable in high water. Then comes the glorious Greenbanks. The attractive hut overlooks the Bend, Sands, Mid Hole and the Slips. Easily waded this is the most flattering water to fish. Further downstream the fast flowing Flats fish increasingly well as the water level drops. The small fall above Potarch Bridge leads into the deep Bridge Pool, a good spring holding pool. Then the Little Floating Bank, Burn of Angels, Floating Bank and Upper and Lower Inchbare complete this extraordinary quality fishing.

The river bank is a treasury of wild flowers and oyster catchers, curlews, dippers and long tailed tits are among the many birds to look out for. Watch out too for the otters and deer. The bank is designated a Site of Scientific Interest for its botanical importance.

In summer most sea trout are caught in the mornings owing to a lack of balmy evenings in June. The summer growth on the banks before they are cut makes this a time for experienced fishers.

CATCHES OVER 30LBS

The Borrowston beat has records going back almost 100 years showing numerous fish caught in the range 30 to 38lbs.
