1-1/2 miles single / double bank. 13 named pools. Fly only
The Ruel is a classic West Coast spate river. From the place where it is joined by the Garvie Burn below the ruins of Dunans Castle, it is fishable for about 12 miles as
it flows through Glendaruel and into Loch Riddon.
Prior to the arrival of fish farms in Loch Riddon in the 1970s, annual catches on the river averaged about 100 salmon and 400 sea trout. The numbers then dropped dramatically, but recently aquaculture activity in the Loch has diminished and in 2012, the last cages were removed entirely.
Over the last few years, there has been a re-stocking programme using broodstock caught in the river, and in the last two years, there have been very encouraging signs that the numbers of salmon and sea trout returning to the river are increasing significantly and some very good fish have been caught and released.
Fishing activity over the last few years has however been very low, but now for the first time, day tickets are available to fish for Salmon Sea trout and Brown trout through Fishpal over a large part of the river, and particularly in spate conditions, the prospects are very exciting.
Fishing is fly only and on a catch and release basis.
Whilst the season runs from 1st May until 31st October, migratory fish seldom arrive before the end of June.
