FishIceland have carefully chosen a combination trip which showcases classic Icelandic trout and salmon fishing rivers. You will fish crystal clear flowing water for aggressive wild brown trout and strong fighting Atlantic salmon.
The domestic transfer between airports and river lodges gives a great chance to see the beautiful countryside, lava fields, volcanos, waterfalls, glaciers and many mountains. Both fishing areas enjoy very comfortable and well appointed lodges.
The Laxa in Adaldalur is approximately a 45 minute drive east from Akureyri airport. Although having a reputation as being the BIG fish river of Iceland for salmon it is also well known as one of the best brown trout rivers in the world due to the alkaline levels and prolific weed growth. The Lower Adaldalur beats are teeming with big aggressive wild brown trout.
It is possible to fish up or downstream using streamers and weighed nymphs but the dry fly gives best results when fishing upstream with tiny size 16 midge imitations. The light kiss on the surface as the fly is sucked down can suddenly have you attached to 5lb wild fish with enormous fighting power and strong will. The average size of trout is 2-3lbs with some excellent specimens in the 5-7lb region. Several brown trout of up to 10lbs have been caught in recent years.
The description for the salmon fishing on Laxa in Adaldalur (Laxamyri beat) can be found this page
FishIceland only provides top professional guides that have fished these rivers and beats for many years and therefore know the water like the palms of their hands. This will ensure a very memorable fishing trip and fishing under the midnight sun is an experience no angler will ever forget.
Full board accommodation is included and each rod is assigned to a twinbedded bedroom with made-up linen beds and towels. Rod sharing is allowed but limited to two persons per rod (small extra cost for the lodging). Daily anglers will enjoy three superior meals and all the cooking is done by leading Icelandic chefs.
Whilst Icelandic summers are generally warm by day, weather conditions can change quite rapidly. Therefore, it is prudent to prepare for inclement weather and take warm clothing, rain wear and a wind proof jacket.
Occasionally the Adaldalur midges can be very persistent, so in addition to praying for wind because that helps to keep the midges down in the vegetation, you will need to bring net protection. Remember, however, that midges do mean good trout fishing!
