This wonderful river is surely one of the best Atlantic salmon rivers in the world. Laxa in Asum has many fans who come to Iceland every year solely to fish in this pearl of a river.
Laxa in Asum is known for producing the highest average number of salmon per rod per day in Iceland. The fishing is so good that a quota is in place limiting the catch to 20 salmon per rod per day. Since the river is only fished for 90 days each season with only two rods there is always a fresh pool available for the angler.
The average catch for the past five years has been over 500 salmon with the average weight of the salmon reaching 6½lbs.
Laxa in Asum is a fly only river for the entire season and voluntary catch and release is widely practiced. All salmon caught in Septemeber and salmon measuring over 70 cm (27") must be released. The fishing is perfectly suited for light single-handed rods, floating lines and very small flies. The salmon will often rise enthusiastically to a well presented riffling hitch!
One guide per rod is recommended for best coverage of pools and for knowledge of the river and best fly patterns. Cost per guide per rod per day is £290.
The Laxa in Asum lodge is a cozy and comfortable cabin, with 3 double bedrooms, sleeps 4-6 people, well equipped kitchen, sitting room, bathroom and outside jacuzzi on the veranda. The lodge is self catering, but full service accommodation is alternatively available at the new full service Blanda Lodge for £120 per rod per day (10-15 min driving distance).
Laxa in Asum is traditionally booked solid from beginning to end, but rods do become available from time to time.
