Newsletter May 2016

Anglers out casting a line have enjoyed some excellent sport during the last few weeks. The River Spey which was lightly fished in April produced a 27lber at Ballandalloch, a 25lber at Arndilly and 31 salmon on Gordon Brae Water beat.

The Ness at Dochfour have seen their best April in 5 years with 22 fish and so has Dee beat Lower Crathes & West Durris with 62 fish for March and 50 for April.

Esks angler's have had some good sport in April including a 30lber caught at Kinnaber and 31 fish for Canterland beat, their best for 5 years.

The River Tay is fishing very well with some beats seeing their best early season fishing for many a year.

May is the most consistent fishing month of all rivers for spring fishing throughout Scotland and Northern England. With a general warming of temperatures it really is time to dust down those rods and get out, and who knows you could be the next FishPal Malloch Trophy winner. The last two winners have caught their winning fish in Spring.

We don't know what the summer weather patterns will bring, we do know that May and June are good months to go fishing.

Please give Tom a call in the office on 01573 470612 if you need any help arranging your fishing trip this year, including recommendations on where to stay or guides to use. For the latest fishing availability this month please follow this link.

Have a great May

Murray Stewart playing his salmon.

Congratulations to Murray Stewart who caught a fish of a lifetime on the fly on the North Esk at Kinnaber at the end of last month. You can read about Murrays fish in the July edition of Trout & Salmon magazine.

Kinnaber is numbered among the top fly beats in Scotland, thanks to its location as a streamy beat just above the mean spring tide mark, with the chance of catching a licer straight off the tide. The beat can be quiet one moment and then come all aboil the next - read more.

Sea trout tend to start early at Kinnaber, coinciding with the best runs of spring salmon in May and early June - find fishing.

Divine Intervention

This year the world commemorates 400 years since the death of William Shakespeare and if, whilst in pursuit of Salmon, you are looking for divine intervention, consult the Shakespeare Oracle. Well that is what has been said about the “The Shakespeare Oracle”, tarot cards and accompanying Shakespearean orientated book. No doubt a touch of inspiration here for one of the best selling double hander ranges on the market - read more.

Angling Active Stirling says "This range of rods has caused quite a stir within the salmon fly community. The price point screams out as the main advantage, but we sometimes hear of customers buying them as a backup rod just in case they break their favourite (more expensive) rod and then end up switching to the Oracle because they just love it" - read more.

Colin Tait from Coldingham enjoyed a memorable day's fishing Dryburgh Upper last month and caught his magnificent fish on film. Using a Go Pro he filmed the take, playing the fish and Rob Dixon netting it and it's subsequent release - watch the video.

River Spey

Terje Vidar Harangen from Norway caught his 27lber on Ballindalloch Castle beat in April.

Thank you to Malcolm Newbould for the weekly Spey Fishing Report. Again the catches are reasonably well distributed from above Grantown to the sea. It is nice to see a few sea trout being caught, judging by the cold nights I assume most are being picked up whilst fishing for salmon. As the catches improve, availability is disappearing fast.

The Spey Fishery Board and Spey Foundation Briefing for May 2016 has now been published and is available to read and download here.

Monroe (aged 12) first time casting a fly on the River Spey caught his first ever salmon, a 6lb beauty on a Greenwell's Glory and a single handed rod. Congratulations from everyone at FishPal.

Fish The Tyne

North Tyne, May 4th caught by Dave Brown on the fly.

Catches have been more spread recently with fish reported from Wylam to Chollerton on the North Tyne.

Last week fish were seen moving at Chesters and a fish was lost after a brief tussle. As word spread, just upstream above Chollerford on Chollerton water, gillie Johnny Griffiths also saw fish moving and again had a brief tussle before parting company with a good sized springer. A very large fish was also lost by a female angler last week below Corbridge - read more.

Catches at Bywell and Styford have continued and fish seem to be ascending the pass more readily in the lower flows and slightly warmer water - find fishing.

Fishing The Findhorn

Ian Neale with a springer around 14lbs from Darnaway, Findhorn in April.

Ian Neale reports "Fourteen fish and one sea trout for the week which was really a great result. There were certainly some good numbers of fresh fish seen running through both beats over the last couple of days of the week. Hopefully, these fish will soon push on up river towards the middle beats over the forthcoming weeks" - read more.
