Yesterday's Catches - Today's River Levels - Tomorrow's Availability

Newsletter - October 2015

The salmon season is drawing to a close on many rivers this month and those lucky to be out and about casting a line are enjoying some mixed sport. Anglers fishing the following rivers have caught salmon at 20lb plus this month; Annan, Ayrshire, Dee, Esks, Lochy, Ness, Tay, Tweed and Tyne - see largest fish.

There is lots of availability in November and with current weather forecasts, November could be a very productive month indeed. But it is November and don't forget that you can insure your fishing up to 14 days prior to your trip. Details of the insurance cover can be found here.

Now the trout season has closed, anglers are turning their attention to grayling. FishPal staff have been working hard behind the scenes with owners, so we can offer customers a better selection of grayling and coarse fishing permits this autumn - find fishing.

If you have caught and released a 20lb plus salmon on a Scottish river this year, we would encourage you to enter the FishPal Malloch Trophy. Every angler who enters this prestigious trophy will be recognised for their achievement. New for 2015, there is the junior salmon award, the best four juniors will receive a fabulous goodie bag and spend a day with Scott Mackenzie on the River Tay next summer.

If you need any help with arranging your fishing trip, please give Tom a ring in the office on 01573 470612 or follow this link for the latest availability.

Fishing Cleuchhead

Ian Watt playing a grilse on Cleuchhead.

Last month whilst photographing beats with Michael Fearn from the Annan Rivers Trust, I met Thomas Watt and his dad Ian fishing Cleuchhead beat.

Like many anglers, most of Ian's fishing is on his local trout fishery with the odd day river fishing for trout and grayling. He enjoys his salmon fishing trips with his son, if he's lucky they manage to go twice a year. "When you eventually hook into your first salmon it's normally panic stations" say's Ian.

I asked Ian if he would go back into the river as I wanted a photograph of Ian fishing. We could not believe it when his line straightened and he hooked into and played a grilse - a photographers dream, thank you.

2016 Availability

From this month beats are starting to add their 2016 Spring availability. To be one of the first to be notified we recommend you book a Rod Alert to receive emails denoting new availabilities on your selected river and beat(s) - find 2016 fishing.

We are currently working closely with owners and agents and aim to get the majority of availability on to the system during the next few months.

Spring Fishing South Esk

Angler with a fine Finavon salmon

For more than 200 years the South Esk has been blighted by the presence of coastal nets just outside the estuary at Montrose. The government has proposed an end to all Scottish coastal nets from 2016 for a minimum of 3 years. It is no exaggeration to state that salmon can now enter the South Esk in 2016 unimpeded every month.

“I wouldn't be at all surprised if numbers of spring salmon caught on the South Esk, particularly in the month of May, double in the next few years” Colin Gibb August 2015

Finavon Castle Water is a hidden gem offering the visiting angler 2.8 miles of double bank fishing divided into four two-rod beats. With 24 pools and an average of 114 salmon and grilse and over 100 sea trout.

Your FeedBack

Anglers chatting about their fishing on the Lochy

Each month we will be sharing your fishing feedback, top flies, top fisheries and who makes the best cup of tea.

The Met Office & BBC weather forecast were actually correct and the river was in good condition which for my short visit was very important. I hope my next visit will have the same outcome? One salmon (hen) approx. 15lb and in very good condition. Beat fished - Stair Estate.

Ghillies very helpful, made our days more enjoyable with the drought conditions on low water. Great tea makers also! 2 fish Willy Gunn Tube fly and Red Francis. Beat fished - Bemersyde.

Water at good level, with many fish moving. Large fresh sea liced salmon moving up the river. Several fish hooked and not landed. Weather was bright and cloudy with a light downstream breeze. I caught one 6lb hen salmon on a 1 inch Red Francis tube fly which took just in the upper riffles in the centre of the river. Beat fished Hesleyside.

Please keep sharing your stories and photographs to or call the office on 01573 470612.

Flies To Try This Month

Rivers are still low so small flies are the best option this month! Cast your fly into the flow at the head and the tail of each pool and use a sinking tip to keep your small patterns close to the river bed.

A cold crisp morning with mist rising off the water offers one of the best chances before the bright sunlight cascades across the stream and at the end of the day the magic time is around 4 o'clock when day light starts to fade.

Caledonia Fly pattern's I will be using this month are a selection of my very small Snaelda patterns, mini Coneheads and Micro treble patterns. Tight lines Malcolm, Caledonia Fly Company.

Junior Success

7 year old Reuben with his first salmon.

Reuben McCaige (7) from Antrim fished the Lower Bann at Portna in July and caught his first ever salmon, a grilse of about 5lb. Reuben increased his tally with another one an hour later and then added 3 more the following week. Well done.

The new FishPal Junior Award hopes to encourage more young people to try salmon fishing in Scotland and increase participation of existing junior anglers. If you have caught a salmon this year, any method, any size, please follow the link to enter the junior competition.

Iceland Update

As the season draws to an end we will eagerly await Iceland's total catch statistics for 2015 from the Federation of Icelandic River Owners. However, one thing is for sure that this summer has been significantly better than could have been predicted for many rivers. As on 30 September there had 48,813 salmon reported for rivers on the national database.

2015 is almost certain to become one of the best seasons ever noted, claiming 2nd place in the past 10 years - read more.
