Newsletter - May 2015   Yesterday's Catches, Today's River Levels, Tomorrow's Availability

Dear Angler

The last four weeks have seen more spring salmon caught over the 20lb barrier on the fly in Scotland and England. Anglers are seeing more fish, with reports from the weekend of sea trout starting to arrive in the Border Esk, Annan, Nith, Tay and Ayrshire rivers. Last week a specimen sea trout of 24lb was caught on the Don, you can read more about it in this months newsletter.

We can now share with you the full story of Tom Buchanan's fish, the first FishPal Malloch Trophy entry of 2015. Tom contacted our offices last month and when we heard his story we telephoned our colleagues at the Trout & Salmon Magazine and gave them this exclusive scoop.

If you are planning a fishing trip this week the Teviot is at a good height and colour, whilst middle and upper beats on Tweed are well worth a cast. The Annan is holding its height well and the river's temperature is just topping 9-10+ Celcius. For trout anglers there are some good hatches of Blue Dunn on the Annan. Levels and prospects are encouraging for those anglers casting a line on the North and South Esk. We would recommend you check the - latest fishing reports on the river you would like to fish, or contact Tom in the office on 01573 470612 who can help to arrange your trip.

With conditions on many rivers looking promising, there is ample affordable spring fishing for salmon and trout - find fishing.

Keep sharing your stories and photographs with the team at FishPal and who knows, like Tom, your story could appear in the Trout & Salmon magazine. You can email or contact us on 01573 470612.

Tight Lines.

River Don, Trout

The Don has seen its best start to the trout season for sometime, say most beats and anglers.

During the last few weeks some excellent specimen fish have been caught, with plenty in the 3 to 4lb bracket and a few tipping 5lb plus. Most fish have been caught on wet flies. However, when the evenings have settled and hatches have come on, fish have been taken off the surface.

Sea trout have started to arrive into the system, encouraging news for anglers who enjoy fishing for large sea trout - find fishing.

River Helmsdale

As predicted, the Helmsdale sprung into action last week with around 30 fish, including 2 belting fish at 20lb and 23lb, reports Ronald Sutherland.

Biggest Spring Fish So far

Tom Buchanan

The largest fly caught salmon so far this year has been caught by Tom Buchanan on the South Chesthill Estate, River Lyon, a tributary of the Tay.

Tom's first fish of the day was caught in the Gate pool. He was fishing the pool fairly fast as he is a big believer of fishing pools quickly and resting them. Working his way down to the tail of the pool, his first fish, a salmon of 12lb came across and took his fly. He played the fish quickly and as it went into the net the fly fell - read more.

Flies For May

Flies For May

With freshwater and higher water temperatures salmon are starting to move up the rivers and with these changing conditions beats further up will now start to fish well. Salmon will be moving higher up in the water, making them more receptive to the fly. You can now safely move on to floating and hover lines with sink tips as fish become more active in the warmer water - find fishing.

Top fly patterns for May are the Holo Silver Cascade, Junction Gunn, Spey Dog and Willie Gunn. For those anglers who like to fish tube flies my recommendations are a Gold Willie Gunn, Monkey, Kinermony Killer and Arndilly Monkey. If the water levels drop a Bobby Dazzler and the Silver Stoat are always worth a cast - read more.

Milne Graden Estate enjoys 1.4 miles of left bank salmon and sea trout fishing. The proximity to the tidal waters result in a reasonable run of spring fish in addition to the late summer and autumn runs. The beat has good runs of grilse and sea trout throughout the summer months and fishes particularly well in low and mid water conditions, where other beats further upstream might struggle - read more.

Wodencroft Cottages, Teesdale

 Tees Trout Fishing

Fishing for wild brown trout on the Tees last weekend, on a stretch of water only available to guests of Wodencroft Cottages, I met up with two members of the England Ladies Fly Fishing team, Phillippa Hake and Lisa Isles. The weather was not ideal for trout fishing with bright sunshine and a cold easterly wind. The Tees is fed by Cow Green reservoir so temperatures don’t tend to rise much until the reservoir starts to warm up around June - read more.
