Overview

The river Ure once supported catches of 3,000 salmon per annum, however pollution during the Industrial Revolution decimated the run of migratory fish.

Now that The Humber River System is becoming cleaner, the populations of salmon and other migratory fish, including sea trout are increasing very quickly in the river Ure.

The Bolton Estate water is divided into three beats, with two-day tickets available on each of the beats.

A strict catch and release policy exists throughout the season, until stocks become more robust.

The Bolton Estate reminds all anglers that they must hold a valid Environment Agency migratory fishing licence.

Bolton Estate hope that you will find the online booking system below clear and easy to use - when you have made your booking, download the map and please carry your Fishpal booking confirmation with you with you as proof of booking.

Thoresby Beat.

The Thoresby beat is approximately 3/4 of a mile of single left bank fishing ,with fishing hut and wc. It is excellent fly water with many pools, runs, and glides. The top of the beat, just before the junction of Bishopdale Beck, is probably the most famous of all the Ure pools, Froddle Dub. Salmon stack up there through the summer, waiting to run Bishopdale in the autumn. Wading is required on some pools and a stick is advised but it’s not extreme; some of the pools are fished from the bank.

Thoresby is best accessed by 4x4 vehicle and it is possible to drive from the top of the beat right down to the bottom, so you can be reasonably close to your vehicle at all times. However there are a few gates on the way; you are in the heart of livestock country!

The beat does require water to fish at its best. If you are unlucky and arrive to find low water, Froddle Dub and Dick Dub are your best options. Another option would be to bring some Trout fishing tackle as Thoresby holds some stunning wild brown trout and Grayling.

Bolton Hall Beat

The Bolton Hall beat is approximately 1.25 miles of double bank fishing, again with a fishing hut and wc. The hut is about halfway along the beat on the left bank. Most 2wd cars will be able to park at the hut. There is good access by foot along the river to the different pools, so the fishing is very accessible without a 4wd vehicle. The Ure is a typical dales river and, like Thoresby, has many pools and glides, some reasonably deep, which can hold fish in low water.

Like most rivers, the Bolton Hall beat has a mix of easy wading on some pools, to some a little more challenging, but there is plenty of water to suit everyone.

Bolton Estate are extremely lucky to be able to offer the services of Brian Towers, who is the freelance estate ghillie and knows the water very well. He is also fully AAPGAI qualified for anyone who would like casting tuition.

Bolton Estate strongly recommend hiring Brian for your first visit at least. He also has a 4x4 which can be used to transport you around the beat as it is not accessible to 2wd vehicles.

Why you need to fish here
