Description

The River Wear is regarded as the premier river in England for sea trout and the number two river for salmon. Bishop Auckland District Angling Club is keen for visitors to the area to enjoy their sport, and with that in mind they can offer very affordable day and season fishing for the Nature Reserve to Newton Cap beat which is largely double-bank. (Check beat map for details.) There are 20 named pools in total, some of which are substantial in size.
Five car parks give access to the beat. The upper end (Nature Reserve Beat) is best accessed from the car-park in Low Barns Nature Reserve. The Get Hooked on Fishing car park gives direct access to the Wadsworth Pool (The gates at both of these places are locked when they close – please check the time beforehand. You can also purchase coffee and light snacks at either place). If you want to fish later then you can use the Paradise car park, turn left after passing under the railway. For access to the bottom of the beat, park in Escomb village, around the Saxon Church. (For all other car parks please check the beat map for details.)
Most legal methods of fishing are allowed, but the use of maggots and ground baiting is strictly banned. (See Club Rules.) Having booked your fishing on-line you should have no problem defining the Club water using the map provided.
