John Dennis from Endsleigh Fishing Club reports: The large spring tides and heavy rain over the bank holiday weekend brought in our first 2 Salmon Caught by a lady Member Mrs Paula Jones a 18lb Salmon at Thompsons Pool followed by a 10lb Salmon caught at Beech Tree both on a brown shrimp fly no 8 , caught on Friday 13th april a Lucky day for Mrs Paula Jones . April has been a very wet month but the rain was needed.

May started with Mr Jon Mc Quade catching 2 Salmon a 7lb caught at Carthamartha run and a 5 1/2 lb caught at Inny Junction both on a red/orange conehead . Mr Alan White caught a 3lb Sea trout at Endsleigh Ham on a Mercers fancy , One of our members Mr Martin Jones cuaght a 1 3/4 lb Sea trout at Carthamartha on a black and yellow 1 inch tube. Mr Mike Gadsdon caught a 2 1/2 lb Sea trout at Lily Pond on a cascade 1inch tube . Mr John Dolly caught a 1 1/2 lb Sea trout at Waterfall on a black ally.

David Pilkington from the Arundell Arms reports: With the wettest April ever recorded, it is hardly surprising that rivers at Lifton have been in various stages of spate for weeks. The really good news is the timing of this water, which gave the salmon and sea trout smolts a safe passage into salt water, unlike the past two seasons where the smolt run took place during very low flows, with obvious risks of predation. Migratory fish took advantage of the high flows to press well upstream, with the first spring run of salmon already well distributed throughout the main Tamar and also into the larger tributaries. David Pilkington, inspired by a good flow of clearish water in the Tamar on the 20th of April, tried for a ridiculously early sea trout on Beat 7a, and hooked the earliest ever sea trout for the Arundell Arms water. After a spirited fight the fish jumped and came off the fly, revealing itself as a spanking fresh fish of some 3 1/2 lbs, saving David the trouble of unhooking it prior to release. A few other sea trout have since been taken on the lower beats, and will push through very quickly on the high flows.

A fresh salmon was hooked and lost on the lower Lyd in high water, then regular rod Dave Chapman tried his luck on beat 7A on the Tamar. Fishing a home-tied orange tube fly in Quarry pool, Dave landed our first salmon of the season on May 4th. The fresh fish was around 7lbs, not an unusual size for a springer. However Daves rod was bending again only two days later, this time with a real cracker, as fresh as new paint and conservatively estimated at 13lbs. Dave’s second fish was from Ash Tree pool and took a Willie Gunn tube fly. Both fish were safely released. Quite how many salmon are around remains to be seen, all the rivers have been carrying huge volumes of water for weeks, and many salmon and sea trout will have by-passed the fish counter down at Gunnislake weir. A highly encouraging start for both species is very much on the cards for 2012.

Brown trout fishing, normally reaching its peak by mid-May, has inevitably suffered from the high water, some beats being unfishable for days on end. When levels have allowed it, some good sport has been enjoyed, particularly on the tributaries, with the Ottery and Wolf fishing well. We had a total of 136 trout for the past month, well down on our average, a reflection of the impossibility of fishing for much of the time. Fly hatches have been very good, with a lot of Hawthorns, and a very welcome flurry of Iron Blues on the Tamar, typically in the filthiest of weather, with the fish really going for them. Black Gnats are now swarming over the stickles, and Yellow May duns are hatching. Phil and Wendy Davies had a catch of 16 trout and a one pound grayling from Home beat on the Lyd, following that with another dozen trout the next day, also on the Lyd, and a really good grayling of 2 pounds for Wendy.

As always, we would be delighted to hear from any anglers fishing on the Tamar with any stories and photos they would like to share, which we can update onto the weekly Fishing Reports page. Please email them to info@fishpal.com

Season review

2011 Report - Arundell Arms The 2011 season as a whole was dominated by serious lack of water throughout, with just a short period of good water levels during Sepember, during which time we landed 21 salmon. The salmon total was 25 fish from our beats at Lifton, plus 4 for our rod on the lower Tamar, and one from our rods at Endsleigh. Of these 30 fish, only 3 were kept. Of the 27 released, the best was for Alexander Jones from Quarry pool on the Tamar, taken on a Rapala in high and dirty water in September. Despite the low flows, runs of salmon during the final few weeks of the season were good, with a decent head of fish now in the river system and prospects for spawning are excellent. The sea trout total was 102 from our beats at Lifton, plus 5 from our rod on the lower Tamar, and 7 from our rods at Endsleigh. From this total of 114 sea trout, only 32 were kept. Of the 82 released fish, the best was a very good peal for the Tamar system at 6 Ω lbs, for Gerald Spiers in Silver Doctor pool on the Lyd, taken in mid-June on a WMD fly. The poor numbers of sea trout are a reflection of the crippling low flows which persisted for so much of the 2011 season. These low flows made trout fishing tough at times, but the total of 2,241 wild browns (virtually all released) shows that our trout stocks are in fine fettle. The early season fishing was better than usual, simply because rivers were consistently low and never out of order due to spates. Dry fly fishing during May and June was superb, and some fine sport was also enjoyed in September. Individual catches and good fish are too numerous to mention, but many experienced rods had bags of over 20 fish in a day, and the best of these were up to 14 inches. We also had 73 grayling, again many good fish were released, the best up to one and a half pounds.

2011 Report - Endsleigh Fishing Club Our season started with low water levels and the driest March since 1961 with very little rainfall. A few kelts have been seen throughout the beats during late March and early April. April being a very warm and dry month with temperatures reaching 22 degrees which made river temperatures rise very quickly; encouraging an abundance of fly life to hatch early. There have been some good catches of trout , Mr james Pearce catching 36 trout of 4oz to 1lb and several grayling from 1lb to 2lb2oz on a black and peacock spider and black gnat .And a Mr mark Stockington catching 23 trout up to 12oz on a butchers wet and large olives .A Mr dean Medley catching 15 trout largest being 1lb2oz caught on a sawyers nymph, olive imergers and dry fly grannon at Dunterue on beat 2 .A Mr philip Norton catching 18 trout up to 1lb on a stone fly nymph and dry fly olives at Carthamartha on beat 1. The Salmon smolts and trout smolts are benefiting from the early fly life . The smolt trap was once again in place during April and despite the low levels of water many smolts have been seen and recorded by cefas in total 4037 wild salmon smolts and 1046 wild trout smolts and 13 hatchery smolts were caught and released with the majority of the smolts still to come down from the tributaries . The warm weather continues into May with river levels still dropping, the first sightings of May fly have been seen on the 15th May which hopefully will produce an abundance of may fly and good dry fly fishing .
