Scaling is a popular picturesque Teesside fishery, surronded by beautiful wild heather moorland. Stocked with rainbows up to double figures. The water is home to a population of brown trout and some pike including specimum pike sizes 20lbs plus recorded. The ideal place for beginners as the fishery is relatively shallow, make fishing easier, it is also suitable for disabled anglers.

Description

Scaling is a very popular fishery serving Teesside and North Yorkshire. It is relatively small at 42 hectares (105 acres) and is shallow with a maximum depth of nine metres (30ft), this makes the fishing relatively easy. Fishing is only from the bank. There is no boat fishing.

Stocking: Weekly stockings of fin perfect rainbows, blues and browns up to double figures. (twice weekly during summer months)

Dates & times: The season is from 16th March to 30th November and fishing times are from 8am to 9pm or sunset (whichever is sooner). November 9am until 3pm only. The shop is open every day in season from 8am until 5pm. Fishing commences at 8am once anglers have signed in.

Try it days: During the season on Tuesdays and Saturdays Derwent reservoir offers fishing tuition. This can be for novices or anglers keen to improve their skills in the art of both fly fishing and muti-bait fishing. The price ranges from £15 for a junior and £30 for an adult and includes all tackle hire, rod licence and three hours of tuition.

Fishing Tips
Fly: Spring and Autumn best area East Bay and South Shore. Best methods, floating or intermediate line with various Gold Head Fritz lures, Black or Green Montanas or Damsels. Summer best area East end, South shore and west end of Dams Wall. Best method floating line with wets such as Soldier Palmer, Invicta and Black and Peacock. On calm days try a team of nymphs including Pheasant Tail and Daiwl Bach or dry flies if fish are rising.
Multi-bait: Spring and Autumn best areas both corniers of Dam and South shore. Best methods ledgered work or maggot. Powerbait with feeder of Magic Dust. Summer best area Big Tree, Timber Groin and Dam Wall. Best method Ledgered worm popped-up with a poly ball. Flavoured corn, soft pellets and gold or silver spinners.

Disabled access: There is a purpose built disabled platform/jetty suitable for wheelchair anglers fishing using the fly and multi-bait. This is located at the main car park next to the visitor centre and shop. Summer water levels check with the shop. Wheelchair accessible toilets, wide door access, hearing loop and parking are available for disabled users.

Shop: There is a well stocked shop and visitor open daily from 8.00am at Grassholme Reservoir. You will find all the fishing equipment you need to get you started from scratch including a range of bait and flies for the day. Snacks, ice creams and hot and cold drinks are available daily along with a range of leisure items for the entire family to enjoy their day out. Fishing starter packs are available from the shop which includes everything you need to enjoy a fantastic day's fishing. Our friendly team of rangers will be on hand to offer you advice and assistance.

Non Fishing Activities
There is a pleasant circular walk, a section which is wheelchair accessible, providing wonderful views across the water. Scaling is a designated nature reserve with a spacious hide overlooking the western part of the reservoir near to the visitor centre and shop.Two seasonal recreational areas with picnic sites and views of the water. Car parking is free. Toilet facilities with disabled access are available.

Online Permits: All permits are for a day only and catch limits must be shared if more than one person is fishing. All anglers aged 12 or over must also be in possession of their own valid individual Environment Agency rod license, which if not already held can be bought from the shop.
