LOCKWOOD Beck offers a timeless quality in an ever changing world. The 60 acres of shimmering water, the varied banks of mixed woodland and spacious moorland, and free rising rainbows and browns can be relied on upon year on year. Browns into double figures have been caught and double figured rainbows.
While Lockwood, under Gordon's tenure, has always been a lake where top quality hard fighting rainbows have featured, there is now a bigger head of superb browns, some which have grown on from stock fish, and other truly wild browns which have started life in the feeder streams at the head of the lake. Many have grown into outstanding and mysterious fish. Mysterious because nobody knows how big they are. Browns into double figures have been caught, and other huge ones, possibly well into the teens of pounds have been hooked and lost. Sometimes, when catching cracking rainbows of 2lb plus, it's easy to forget that lurking close to the bank, or under your boat, there are monstrous browns and double figured rainbows. Latest fishing report
The fish grow on because the feeding is outstanding. Buzzers hatches are plentiful, while damsels, sedge, daddy longlegs, snails, hoglice, and sometimes swarms of ants give the growing fish a varied diet. And once they have reached a certain weight, they can pack on the protein by attacking the shoals of minnows, picking up roach, perch and even frogs. On a diet like that no wonder the fish are huge.
The food supply reflects the many methods that can bring top sport. Lure anglers will always catch their share, while small nymphs will be taken with confidence.
However the best of Lockwood is enjoyed with the dry fly. From April onwards small CDC and Black Ant will be sucked in by trout cruising the upper layer. And you can not beat the thrill of creating a summer evening wake by teasing a Sedge of Daddy through the ripple, only to see the bigger wake of a big trout homing in on your fly... and that's before you set the hook into the fish! So whether you are new to the sport, a run of the mill angler like most who enjoy banter and a few fish, or an expert seeking to further hone skills, Lockwood is the place to head to. And make sure your reel is loaded with plenty of backing!
Over recent seasons the lodge has been extended to add space and comfort, a wheelyboat introduced, extensive instruction made readily available, and varied stocking to ensure that there is something for everyone.
Fly Fishing Courses from beginners to Intermediate are held throughout the season. Courses for 2011
