Hanningfield Reservoir, set within a picturesque part of Essex, not only helps provide water for over 1.8 million customers of Essex & Suffolk Water but is also open for visitors to enjoy a day out in the beautiful landscape.
The reservoir is one of the premier fisheries in the UK providing some of the best reservoir trout fishing by either bank or boat. The standard of fishing combined with the retail and leisure facilities on offer such as Cafe on the water, tackle shop, picnic areas, woodland walks, access to the Essex Wildlife Trust nature reserve, easy accessibility by road and free parking make a trip to Hanningfield Reservoir a great day out.
For bank angling, fishing platforms are provided for both safety and comfort on the concrete banks. You can enjoy excellent fishing from the natural bank, especially early or late in the season when lower water levels allow wading.
A fleet of 40 well maintained powered boats are available to hire from the fishing lodge jetty, including wheelie boats for less mobile anglers.
The varying depths and contours of the reservoir allow for many different approaches to be used to suit your preferred fishing methods. Most methods will work on any given day, so you have the choice to use small imitations through to large lures with excellent chance of success.
ANGLERS PURCHASING TICKETS ONLINE CANNOT COMMENCE FISHING UNTIL THEY HAVE SIGNED IN AT THE FISHERY AND HAVE THEIR PERMIT STAMPED AND DATED BY A MEMBER OF STAFF.

Free fishing for under 17's:
Fishing is fantastic fun for children* and the whole family. It's so easy to learn, makes a great day out and is the perfect way to make friends and above all, have fun. Families can too enjoy a day's fishing as up to two juniors aged eight to 17 can fish for free when one parent or guardian buys a standard day permit. Boats are also available to hire. Please note, only two persons are allowed per boat.
Spinning days are very popular and offer the chance for parents, guardians and children to spend an enjoyable day out fishing. As well as this, our any method fishing further adds to, and enhances, the family fishing opportunities available at Hanningfield Reservoir. For instance, it has made it much easier for the younger generation to get into and enjoy our fantastic sport. Children* under the age of 17 must be accompanied by an adult. The minimum age limit for children fishing from a boat with their parent or guardian is eight years of age.
Fly fishing tuition:
Beginner's courses are available at the reservoir and run under qualified instruction throughout the season. They continue to go from strength to strength and are extremely popular. The tackle and equipment you need for the course is provided so all you need to do is to come appropriately dressed for the weather. Classes take place on Saturdays, and include free rod hire for the day. The course covers casting, tackle, knots, techniques, trout behaviour and safety as well as providing lunch and an opportunity to try your hand at fishing in the afternoon. The beginner's course is a great introduction to fly fishing, where we also welcome junior anglers (must be aged eight years or over). Anyone can join, so book early to avoid disappointment.
